With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
Better yet. Who’s that? The quarterback?
We need a governor as VP, not a has-been senator who would bring nothing to the ticket.
It will be Tim Pawlenty or Charlie Crist or Rudy Giuliani, probably in that order.
Given Blackwell's performance in the gubernatorial race, I wouldn't count on him to deliver much of anything.
Barbour! Good suggestion. And unlike former LA Gov. Blanco, Barbour did a good job with Katrina cleanup, so he’d be insulated from unfair attacks about supposed “slow GOP Katrina response.”
I don’t think many really grasp how this will probably go down. If McCain actually gets the nod, I think we will live during THE most volitile nine months in the history of our nation since the Civil War.
I am dead serious. I bass this on the quantity of people disenfranchised and the will those people posess.
I feel almost to trite to say this, but I’m getting a Costco sized box of popcorn. We are indeed living in interesting times.
Given the size of McCain’s ego I don’t think there’s room for anyone else on the ticket.
Already said. Condi. Twofer. Takes some wind outta whatever sail the Dems hoist (foist).
No, she just left congress having been voted out by the same wackos who voted her in.
Whoever loses the DNC nomination would be the best fit.
I like Santorum, but as a “chemical” matter, McCain won’t pick him because Santorum was absolutely exCORiating McCain in the days leading up to Super Tuesday. My ears are still ringing from his comments on Laura I’s show.
He will die from multiple self-inflicted gun shot wounds to the back.
I like the concept of someone younger and someone black. Michael Steele probably isn’t well known enough, IMHO, but Hoodlum91 is on the right track, I think.
Colin is a little too Lib...better to go Condi
Laura Ingraham!
A minority or a woman for VP might give McCain just enough of an edge to beat Obama/Hillary
