Update 11:17am Eastern. Cheney: “We are at war with an enemy that wants to cause mass death in this country and we must work until this enemy is destroyed…

To wage this fight, we have to marshal our resources to go after the terrorists, take down their networks, disrupt their funding sources…go after the sponsors of terror…

To win a war like this, you need good intelligence…monitoring of terrorist communications. warns of expiration of fisa reform. (applause)

Those who act in good faith to defend this country should not be punished with lawsuits or be hassled by trial lawyers. (Loud applause)

Gitmo interrogations/overseas interrogation…ksm captured: It’s a good thing we had them in custody and it’s a good thing we found out what they knew.

(Standing ovation/applause/cheers.)

“I see many of us are having problems with the stream. At least I don’t feel so alone.”

This is impossible to listen to. At least good to know it isn’t me! Hopefully C-SPAN will rebroadcast the speeches later this evening. Really wanted to hear Cheney, and at 12:20, Romney.

My internet connection shuts off when I log on to cspan to watch, lol.

I don’t want to watch some arrogant reporter show specially selected sound bites tonight, I want to watch the actual speeches myself. People need to see and have this information about the candidates. I don’t like blackouts on information.

Ok, that’s good. At least that’s something. A break from the 24/7 Britt’ny, car chases, and latest wacko gunmen.

The MSM couldn’t even warn people properly about the tornados the other night in the South. The media sucks.

CPAC: Dick Cheney Speech Live-Blog
Dick Cheney is giving one of the first speeches here at CPAC. He got a very warm welcome from the crowd, which is SRO. The Cheney we’re seeing now is the relaxed and funny speaker that we’ve known from many speeches here and other places. The intros are still going on, but I’ll live-blog the substance.

11:18 - Iraq will remain a tough job, as Petraeus has said. He is highlighting the gains from the surge, nothing terribly surprising.

11:14 - Defends the interrogation of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, which gets a rousing cheer from the audience. “They are in full compliance with the nation’s laws and our treaty obligations.” It has saved thousands of lives, Cheney tells the audience. “We do not torture,” but do not shrink from aggressively working to protect the nation.

11:12 - Emphasizing that terrorism is not a law-enforcement issue, but a national-defense and intelligence issue. The US needs to ensure that the front line of our defenses has the tools it needs to protect us. Cheney wants to make sure that the FISA laws passed last year get extended for a lengthy period, and “those who helped secure this nation do not get harassed with lawsuits”.

11:10 - “The absence of another 9/11 is not an accident — it is an achievement.” That gets by far the biggest response. Everyone is on their feet.

11:08 - A better reaction on Bush’s work on pro-life and judicial nominations. Will McCain take a cue from that?

11:06 - Repeats Bush’s pledge to veto budgets that don’t reduce earmarks by 50%. He also talks about the EO on non-legislative earmarks. That gets a bigger cheer, but I suspect that many may wonder why the number can’t be 90% or better, and why the EO couldn’t have applied to this year’s budget. I’m not hearing a huge reaction to this.

11:04 - Demands permanence for the Bush tax cuts and outlines the impact of them. He also calls for lower spending, and explains how that works in a $3.1 trillion budget. Well, that doesn’t get much more than golf claps.

11:03 - Cheney is emphasizing economics, and the need to keep taxes low. “Put more tax money back into the hands of those who earned it.” He promises no new regulations for “meddling” with the economy.

11:00 am ET - He’s underscoring the support that he has for the candidates who will speak here. That may carry some weight with the conservatives, although it was somewhat subtle.

Iraq/Afghanistan: There is still tough work ahead…Fortunately we’ve got the best people in the fight, including Gen. David Petraeus. The new strategy is succeeding, the surge is working, the forces of freedom are winning.

From the very morning our nation was attacked on 9/11, the president of the US has had to make immense, enormous decisions…I’ve seen him make the tough calls and…whether the hits…he’s made the right decisions for the right reasons…I’ve been proud to stand by him…would I support those same decisions today? You’re damn right I would.

(Applause/ovation.)

The important thing to remember…is that the war on terror is still real…we have to proceed on many fronts. Sacrifices of those of us who work at desks in Washington are small…we’ll never lack for inspiration in this fight. For that, we need only to look to America’s heroes in uniform.

I know that later today, CPAC is hosting some of those heroes, including Marcus Luttrell, author of Lone Survivor…we’re reminded of how much this nation owes to the men and women of the US armed forces.

Americans can be proud this is our country.

Little hope without active leadership from America

Nation of influence and nation of character sets US apart in world.

Our purposes are good and right decisive years much still to do

Bush sits next to McCain/Liebo at prayer breakfast

An ‘08’ish White House pool report from Cox’s Bob Deans:

The president delivered his final address before some 4,000 guests at the National Prayer Breakfast, leaving the White House at 8 a.m. for the Washington Hilton in Kalorama and returning at 9:30.

En route to the event, his motorcade passed by a large crowd at Connecticut and K, where a woman held up a blue “Hillary” sign.

Seated at a table on the front row just to the president’s left as he spoke was GOP presidential front-runner Sen. John McCain. Seated to his immediate left was Sen. Joe Lieberman.

With speculation rife that Lieberman might possibly become McCain’s running mate, we asked Lieberman whether this breakfast was to discuss that possibility.

“No,” Lieberman insisted, “we pray for each other.”

McCain’s response:

“I’ve not sought God’s help yet on that,” said McCain, noting that it would be “premature,” then adding, “I’d like to see if we can win the nomination before we begin that process.”
