Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable' The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says the adoption of Islamic Sharia law in the UK is "unavoidable".
Dr Williams told BBC Radio 4's World at One that the UK has to "face up to the fact" that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system.
Dr Williams argues that adopting some aspects of Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion.
For example, Muslims could choose to have marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia court.
He says Muslims should not have to choose between "the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty".
In an exclusive interview with BBC correspondent Christopher Landau, ahead of a lecture to lawyers in London later on Monday, Dr Williams argues this relies on Sharia law being better understood. At the moment, he says "sensational reporting of opinion polls" clouds the issue.
He stresses that "nobody in their right mind would want to see in this country the kind of inhumanity that's sometimes been associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states; states; the extreme punishments, the attitudes to women as well".
But Dr Williams says the argument that "there's one law for everybody... I think that's a bit of a danger".
"There's a place for finding what would be a constructive accommodation with some aspects of Muslim law, as we already do with some other aspects of religious law."
Dr Williams adds: "What we don't want either, is I think, a stand-off, where the law squares up to people's religious consciences."

What a disloyal jerk! If someone immigrates to a country, they should expect to follow the laws of that country, and if they want to change the laws, participate in the democratic process. Moslems in the UK should follow the law of the UK, not Shariah law.

He speaks for the Church of England. Just how, exactly, do you think the Muslims in Britain will have understood what he said today? They will be cheering - they will take it as a sign of Christianity’s weakness, England’s weakness, and that British society will capitulate to their every demand.
They will push for Sharia law in Britain all the harder, now, and they’ll use his words to back themselves up. Rowan the druid has no idea what damage his words will do and to what use they will be put.
Right now, I don’t see any hope for England outside of, maybe (as Michael Savage always says) the soccer hooligans and possibly the BNP. And I never thought I’d come to a day where I’d think the BNP had the answers. But without something like the BNP I don’t see any hope at all for Great Britain. The people of England seem to just be rolling over every time some Muslim shrieks about something. I have never seen such utter dhimmitude and capitulation in the face of the outrageous demands and actions of an immigrant population.

1—Mohammed?. Well this may be caused by the very high proportion of Muslims who give their boys the name Mohammed (or some spelling variation of it).
The sheer number of traditional British first names available will naturally result in a distribution of the names chosen which leads to fewer each of boys named Jack, George, William, Charles, etc. even though there are more of them in total.
So just 3% of Britain is fanatically set on one name for boys. If the other 97% called their sons just one name, then they would be cretinous fanatics as well. But no, they choose to use a variety of names, and so the fanatics rather by a case of default get 2nd place...
