Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable' The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says the adoption of Islamic Sharia law in the UK is "unavoidable".
Dr Williams told BBC Radio 4's World at One that the UK has to "face up to the fact" that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system.
Dr Williams argues that adopting some aspects of Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion.
For example, Muslims could choose to have marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia court.
He says Muslims should not have to choose between "the stark alternatives of cultural loyalty or state loyalty".
In an exclusive interview with BBC correspondent Christopher Landau, ahead of a lecture to lawyers in London later on Monday, Dr Williams argues this relies on Sharia law being better understood. At the moment, he says "sensational reporting of opinion polls" clouds the issue.
He stresses that "nobody in their right mind would want to see in this country the kind of inhumanity that's sometimes been associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states; states; the extreme punishments, the attitudes to women as well".
But Dr Williams says the argument that "there's one law for everybody... I think that's a bit of a danger".
"There's a place for finding what would be a constructive accommodation with some aspects of Muslim law, as we already do with some other aspects of religious law."
Dr Williams adds: "What we don't want either, is I think, a stand-off, where the law squares up to people's religious consciences."

Good plan!
Say 'hello' to Uncle oSAMa!
While I, too, oppose open door immigration, it does not really help the cause to make hysterical comparisons with the situation in Europe.
An open door to the Christians of Latin America, poor, and often besotted with ‘liberation theology’ is not nearly so dangerous as an open door to Muslims from North Africa, Turkey and the Indian subcontinent. Our problem is corrosive to the rule of law, but not to Christian civilisation, Europe’s problem is corrosive to both.
Is that guy the new Dumbledore? He looks a lot like him.
They don't have to choose. If their culture is incompatible with British law, they can go live elsewhere.
~The point is obvious and poorly taken. Just because someone meets with someone doesnt mean their beliefs rub off. Condaleeza Rice once had dinner with the Chinese Ambassador - that doesnt make her a communist.
I too share some misgivings about Charles, but you’ll need to do better than that to make the point.
The Archbishop is insane. Absolutely flipping insane.
Too true.
“Compromise is a fine thing, but not when its based on an illusion, and I dont think we can compromise with this new form of terrorism” Tony Blair
That’s like asking a cancer patient to make peace with his tumor.
No the couldn't, because there is no such place.
Where are they?
Evidently you have either been asleep or refuse to face reality for the last 10 years.
Which politican gets the most votes, the one who promises the most personal freedoms or the one who promises the most freebies?
Hang on, Aren't they supposed to "embrace diversity" or does that only apply to the indigenous people?
Sharia Law and British law are incompatible. The Government needs to BAN Sharia law now.
“Lord, help them.”
There is very little the Lord can do for Britain if it has no desire to help itself. Remember that it has a free will. Also, realize that we here (US) are under the same threat considering the way we kiss the Muslim’s ass.
But it looks like the end of the West. It's hard to believe that people are giving in so easily. So very sad.
Nature abhors a vacumm. England has longsince jettisoned its own moral code and religious principals. So, it’s not entirely surprising that those who believe in something eventually prevail over those who believe in nothing.
Just burn the Mafna Carta and get it over with.
