The book “Justinian’s Flea” is a very good read regarding Justianian’s rule and the megatrends that marked the transition from the classical era to the middle ages.

I actually disliked that book. I thought it was an unremarkable summary of Justinian's reign and the author (shockingly /sarc) takes unnecessary cheap-shots at Christianity.
