Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008
SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.
The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.
The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.
McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.
Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.
Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.
Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

I am getting a very bad sense of déjà-vu. Hoping the opponents nominate a really horrible candidate that will be "easy to beat", but then losing. Not sure if it's premonition, history, or some of both.
Many of his supporters are also bitter angry folks who think the vile old fool is entitled.

You know, Bob Dole was another injured veteran and he didn’t have to talk about his problem, it was evident..However, he could not give a political speech that would capture the hearts of the people..He spoke like this:

Reagan could talk better than that in his sleep...what i am saying is: McCain has to really lay it on the line, quit lying to the people and really kick some ass if he expects to win in November..If he really is against amnesty now, then he had better say so clearly and emphatically...
my take is that that will not happen...spraypainting his stripes won’t change the zebra..But if that is the Rep to run against Hillary or Obama, then we have to get out and vote for him...like people say here-—ANYBODY but Hillary, or Obama, or any Dem...
When has McCain ever shown as much enmity toward liberals as he routinely does toward conservatives? For that matter, when has he offered any sort of energetic opposition to liberals on anything? Could you offer some examples?
McCain has sometimes voted in our favor, but has he done anything else within the last few years to oppose liberalism? Is there any reason that he would start if he were elected President?

Know this: That WHATEVER happens this November, it is for His purposes. We may not like it, but that is because we usually don’t understand it.
Hard to imagine, but even Hillary would fit into God’s ultimate plan.... Let’s just pray He’s not ready to go there quite yet.
It’s not temper tantrums. It’s two different types of people and two different mindsets and the two will never agree. There will always be those who lay back and take it and those who fight back.
The republican party is placing their bets on those who will lie back and take it. And as long as that keeps happening nothing is going to change. It’s just prolonging the agony.
U-tube, and the like, have become a major part of politics. You can say what you want, and there are no journalistic ethics to worry about. Excerpts out of context are the easiest way to damage a man's character. I think we all know this and take it with a grain and attempt to diligently verify the truths. Sometimes that is not easy to do.
Over the past four years, the MSM has gone into election mode. They learned how to manipulate the news with only a simple headline.
Romney has been the target since he announced. I know, because I was one of the first to donate once his campaign started and the website went up. I've followed it all from the beginning.
The MSM does not want Romney up against Clinton. Pay no attention to National polls at this stage. They are always wrong.
Romney had the best chance, with his superior fund-raising and his wealth, and worse then that for the Dem's, he has the ability to bring socials, fiscals and security law and order types together for the general.
McCain cannot do that. No way.
The very first negative that the MSM used was that Romney was too slick and untrustworthy. The built on that and kept mentioning his wealth and that he was buying the election, and his too slick, too prepared, too handsome, to much hair, too prepared in debate's, too flip floppy, too slick by half!
Now, when ever a accusation makes it's rounds, most everyone believed it to be true and never checked the facts. At some point, Romney's words were all lies because of all the negatives, and yet all Romney has ever done is to be honest, and truthful. He figured the stuff would not stick. he explained his change in position to pro-life elloquently, and I believe him because I made the change for the same reasons, and the same year Romney did. A lot of men did.
If we had more time, perhaps we could confront all this distortion of his record, and his words, but I don't think we have the time.
When a candidate has to spend all his time answering BS accusations, the campaign suffers greatly and momentum cannot be established.
The MSM wants McCain, and may well get him.
If that happens, they know from the conservative history that many of us will not turn out if we don't have what we believe to be a candidate that is conservative enough. We will do the Dole.
This means Hillary sails to the WH.
The Conservatives spend a lot of time degrading Romney to elevate Duncan and Fred. Now they have to reverse course and that is not easy to do. It's not easy to turn a battle ship.
That ship is turning, but will the turn be complete by the 5th? What's even worse is that early voting has already begun.
If all this goes badly and McCain is nominated, he will not win without conservative support. I cannot under any circumstances vote for a politician that I have despised for twenty years. He's not only a very poor representation of a Republican, much less a conservative, he's a angry, bitter scoundrel who should have done time for the Keating Five bank fraud. All he cares about is the power and money to get back at his enemies.
He's a very dangerous man to have in the WH. I can honestly say, that I'd rather a Dem won, then his highness because we could at least blame the democrats for a F'd up USA.

Romney and McCain are both bought and paid for...research who is funding them and council. Check out the funding Hillary has obtained from the oil companies. All of these candidates will have favors to return if elected.
Also, I'm by no means a Paul fan, but if they are going to include the man in the debate, why not let him speak more than two words. I find Anderson Cooper's cutting off of Paul each time to be very rude.
Sorry - I didn’t mean to be uncivil. I honestly didn’t mean that you wouldn’t understand a oopy of a transcript, but that you would interpret it differently. There’s no point arguing over something like that-it can go on and on and on (and has already!)

Very good Hoodat. I'm not a religious person, but funny you should make that post. Several minutes ago, I was considering making a thread on that very theme. I'd like to sincerely join you in that prayer. I'm so concerned for the direction of this country.
It is amazing how well Mitt does in these debates after a major loss! : ) He does even better! There is much to admire about a person like that. : )
I think Huckabee won this debate. He was the only one who sounded like he understood the federalist first principles that Fred always talked about as well as Reagan’s ability to communicate those ideas to middle class Americans who are under hard times right now.
He also wins points for challenging the goofy stimulus plan though I wish he adopted Jon Kyl’s position. Jon Kyl. Now that’s the real straight talk from Arizona.
