MIAMI - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states.
"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party," the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "It's a very significant boost, but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come."
The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.
Rudy Giuliani was in third place, his best showing of the campaign but possibly not good enough to warrant continuing.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed but told supporters he would forge on.
The election cannot be bought, but it sure helps if a person plays dirty, right out of the Clinton Handbook.
“Remember Valley Forge, what if they just walked away?”
You’re comparing John McCain to George Washington? Wouldn’t Benedict Arnold be a more appropriate comparison?
Bummer.
Floridians, are you insane?
A light of the impending endorsement of McCain by Guiliani would you care to revise your remarks. Let's face it, just like for the last 8 years, this election cycle is a repudiation of sanity.
That is a very telling comment. To you, another Bush term would be unbearable. I guess Alito and Roberts dont ring a bell with you ... and no terrorist attacks here since 9/11/01 ... etc. etc.Running as President Bush's 3rd term is not going to win the election.
Big time bummer. While I certainly appreciate the rat media and “independents” “helping” us decide our conservative nominee... /s
BUTT the HELL OUT!
“He is no conservative leader. And he cannot “unite” the party.”
The onlygroups McCain will unite will be the Rino’s, Moderates, Independents and Mexicans.
One thing that is sorely needed--particularly after Super Tuesday if it emerges that John will be the nominee, is a NATIONAL COORDINATING CONFERENCE of major Reagan Conservative groups: Eagle Forum, Human Events, YAF, Pro Life Groups, ALIPAC, etc. to begin debate and brainstorming, and bring about a new movement in this country, so that we are not forced to support either Democrat (D) or Democrat (R) on Election Day. That is NO CHOICE AT ALL.
A Choice, Not An Echo.
Oh brother!
I guess I’ll have to paraphase Ronald Reagon — “I did not leave the REPUBLICAN PARTY, the REPUBLICAN PARTY left me.”
Third Party anyone??
Honest debate? So far all I've heard is wailing and gnashing of teeth here after McCain's victory.
You guys would make the stars on a soap opera look like Marines.
I'm not generally a praying man, but now is probably a good time to pray for divine intervention.
Well, I was going to vote for the Republican candidate, but McCain doesn’t qualify.
McCain has done nothing but screw Republicanism and conservativism for the last eight years. He’s not going to change. He hates the conservatives in his own party more than he dislikes the Democrats. How can he be trusted?
“I might be able to go along with that if there wasnt a whole continent out there gunning for our destruction. This is not the time to teach the party a lesson and make a capitulator Commander in Chief.”
I can’t take McCain or Jorge seriously as C-in-C. Jorge has and McCain would leave our borders wide open, and both tried to pass legislation that gave us 24 hours to investigate any illegal who presented himself for amnesty under last summer’s bill.
The greatest threats from Islamic jihadis are within the USA, not overseas. The WTC was not in Baghdad or Kabul. These open borders half-wits are tempting fate, and if and when a terrorists attack is carried out by terrorists who crossed our southern border, the public will have moments of clarity on how to view Jorge, Juan McCain and their ilk.
McCain is a joke as a defender against Islamic threats. He’d put the red carpet out and make it much wider.
I won’t vote for McCain. I prefer a Democrat that will give life to the Republican party then McCain.
why exactly is huckerbee staying in the race, even the new york mayor knows he has no chance yet Huckerbee stays in to take the votes away from Romney and I suspect for personal reasons which just shows that even the minister is not beyond school yard revenges
Get out huckerbee for the love of this party
