Breaking News: Rudy Giuliani hints at dropping out
LA Times ^ | 28 January 2008 | Andrew Malcolm

Rudy Giuliani appears to be pondering an end to his long pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination.

In a meeting in the back of his chartered plane en route to St. Petersburg, Fla., a short while ago, the onetime, longtime GOP front-runner told a small group of reporters, including The Times' Louise Roug: "The winner of Florida will win the nomination."

Saw Rudy on Fox this am. He looked depressed. His handlers ought to put him on a suicide watch.

If I recall, he had a pretty good record as a prosecutor and he did do a pretty good job of cleaning up NYC (at least that’s what I hear - I’ve never been there).

I used to live in NYC. Rudy was a BIG improvement over his predecessor Dinkins. New York cleaned up quite a bit under Rudy's administration. I think a big part of the reason was that Rudy owed nothing to New York's black community, and had no reason to pander to it

FNC this morning said Rudy was going to take FL by a large margin??

Hundreds of thousands of absentees have already voted even BEFORE the candidates came to town (something terribly wrong with that process).

Giuliani practically lived in Fla, revving up the absentee vote.

So many absentees probably voted Giuli BEFORE the dirt came out about him porking Jooty on the taxpayers dime.

Giuli may also be flying people in who have already voted absentee.

PLUS there's a huge number who live and vote elsewhere who switched their registrations to Fla.

I hope Romney challenges every single Giuli votes.

Yeah, isn’t it amazing what you can get done if you don’t have to spend all your time and energy on “pay backs”?

I heard that as many as 1 million votes had been cast as either “early voting” or absentee votes. Hopefully the dual voting by New Yorkers will be caught and prevented this time.

Funny how they print these "dropping out stories" before election day. Same crap they pulled with Fred Thompson. It would not surprise me in the least if the source, far from being Rudy himself, was a Romney staffer.

I know people from Massachusetts; they are warning us that Romney projects a squeaky clean image, but he is totally untrustworthy. Those who swallow the "he's the only conservative left" line either don't know what a conservative is, think someone becomes a conservative in an overnight conversion, or are just fooling yourselves.

Look, I intend to vote for Fred Thompson - I won't vote for a Democrat in a Republican label - but if you are looking for the last conservative, do not overlook Giuliani. While it is true that he is NOT a social conservative, he is right - and experienced - on everything else. True, he too changed positions on RKBA and amnesty - but the difference between Rudy and Mittens is that Mittens is pandering to us on everything, and will switch back to his leftist tendencies in the general election when he wants demonrat and independent support.

Guiliani is honest enough to say he is a social liberal - if he won't pander on abortion, he just may be honest when he says he has changed his mind on sanctuary cities. His record as US attorney shows he wants judges who obey rather than make the law, so we are safer depending on him to nominate people for SCOTUS, then counting on Romney remembering if he is for or against us on the day he sends a name to Congress.

My opinion - the LA Times looked at what is left of our field, and is trying to kill votes for the only near-conservative left. We need to prevent any Lib from getting our nomination; our only hope is an open convention where at least we can't do worse than what is left. Whatever you do, whether it is vote for Fred Thompson to let the RNC know we don't want the RINO garbage we are offered election after election, or not - do not swallow the Romney Kool-aid.

Yeah---hope so. Giuliani is so transparent---actually believes the rest of us aren't onto his schemes and voting scams.

I also think he's short on money b/c his backers had given him access to tons of money while he was a likely winner---now that he bombed, they pulled out on him.

Where did they go? All signs indicate they are backing McCain.

Who was the source of that statement?

I really can’t say Tommy. I hadn’t even made it to the coffee pot yet and when I saw FNC I was heading for the remote to change it when I heard that statement.

I have had Fox News on all day. I haven’t heard anything but pure speculation that “it would be a miracle if Rudy pulls off an upset”. I think he will end up 3rd or 4th.

I fully expected him (not that I WANTED him, but I expected him) to do better in NH.

If he can’t cut it in the NE, he’s toast everywhere else.

This morning local talk radio polled the Rudy supporters in the audience with this question-if he drops out, where will your support go?

Unfortunately, most of the dolts that called said McCain.

And I believe that such an appointment would be a good fit for all involved.

I'm a little nervous about Rudy as Attorney General or Secretary of Homeland Security.

His attack on gun manufacturers through product liability lawsuits shows a serious lack of respect for individual rights, and for narrowly targeting efforts on criminals.

He has far too much of an authoritarian streak for my comfort.

I don't doubt that he would go after our nation's enemies. I worry that he would stomp on a lot of innocent people in the process because he seems to have a relatively broad interpretation of the ends justifying the means.

I think he would be a good choice for such a position in the administration of a truly conservative President which would keep him in check. However, I don't see any such conservatives among the remaining candidates.

There are obviously worse choices than Rudy for those positions, but I would hope there are also better ones.
