WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy. Congressional officials close to the negotiations said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio reached agreement in principle in a telephone call Thursday morning.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two wanted key members of their parties to sign off on the accord before any announcement.
The accord came as the White House said Thursday an agreement was imminent.
Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes.
Families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, subject to an overall cap of perhaps $1,200, according to a senior House aide who outlined the deal on condition of anonymity in advance of formal adoption of the whole package. Rebates would go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.
I first shot the Ruger 44 magnum revolver at Shooter's Emporium in Escondido. That was in March 1983. I didn't track down another indoor range until August 1999. The owner of Shooter's Emporium is reported deceased and that facility is closed.
I live in Idaho now. No silly politicians working night and day to write anti-gun laws. The outdoor range costs me $40 per year for unlimited use. The practical limits are time available and suitable weather. I like to shoot paper targets at long ranges. My best rifles will let me put 10 rounds through a single ragged hole at 100 yards. That can only be attempted on a calm day. Those are rare. I take steel spinners to the range on windy days. My favorites are made by Douglas Precision. My favorite spinners are 10" diameter with a 2" trapdoor in the center. A hit on the trapdoor sounds very different from a strike on the outer disk. Spinners are reusable, don't make a mess and are suitable for multiple shooters.
Eight inch disk, 2" trap door in the center. I can reliably hit the center of this target with my 1911 45Auto at 25 yards. It's the perfect size/weight for 38SPL, 9mm, 40 S&W and 45Auto, 45LC.
I don’t know if they are right, that’s just what they’ve been reporting. We’ll probably know for sure by tomorrow.
I’m shocked!
The target range I went to is only open on weekends for regular folks like me. And I think there might be only one other in the area (central CA).
I never heard of spinners before. I’ll have to ask my local gun dealer about them. I need to go visit with him anyway as I think he might be in charge of the other target range I mentioned.
Boy, your shooting abilities are impressive. Do you compete professionally by any chance?
Here's how I'd make the call:
The upper class---the rich---have F.U. money. In other words, they don't have to work. The upper middle class have plenty of dough---enough that they can pick and choose the job they want---the job that makes them happy.
The regular middle class has enough dough to lead a comfortable lifestyle, but they don't have the ability to take the job they really want---they work more for the paycheck than anything else.
The lower middle class leads a modestly comfortable lifestyle, but they constantly sweat money, and are typically only a paycheck or two away from real trouble.
The lower class is scraping real hard just to get by.
I'm a fricken online editor, but congress thinks I'm Steven effing King.
I feel ya, man.
You’re probably pretty close on your assessments.
However, according to the Demonrats - $75,000 is upper class. Maybe in North Dakota (no offense to Dakotans - my pop was from Reeder) but not in the major cities of the U.S.
So, I’m thinking there’s gonna be a LOT of middle class folks not gettin’ a “rebate” from the Dems, who think that people who paid nothing are entitled to money (which is, ahem, vote buying pure and simple).
