Of course there has to be the obligatory comment from a grant junkie to remind the fat asses that Gubmint is engaged in a public social engineering experiment designed to shame, denormalize and change behavior to save the Gubmint and tax payers money to treat their diabetes...

But some experts say this sort of message is dangerous and undermines public health efforts to rein in obesity. “We do have to be careful not to put all the blame on the individual,” said Dr. Walter C. Willett, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. But he added, “The large majority of people who are overweight are overweight because of lifestyle.”

Any fat jokes or pics on this thread will be in honor of the 15 morbidly obese fat annoying women who waved their sausage like fingers in front of their face when I smoked in the bar. Then they put the cell phone back to their ear and dove right back into their plate of nachos and refried beans.

Shut up and get on the boxcar with the smokers. Don't worry, the drinkers will soon be there to keep you company in the camp for undesirables who displease the state.

Some of the comments on these blogs are pretty funny though.

Sorry, but I worked for a surgeon who did stomach surgery for obese people. He stated that 99.9% of them had a eating problem....they just won’t put their forks down and they won’t get to moving. He’d done thousands of procedures. It always boils down to choices....nobody made them do it.

“One of the first obstacles to fat acceptance is breaking down the question of whether being fat is a choice,”

Ironic, isn't it, that the number of fat people have grown at the same time as sedentary computer jobs, nintendo, and movies on videotape, and endless sources of cheap fast food have come on the scene.

But of course, being fat isn't a choice. It's one's destiny. Keep eating that cheeseburger, sister.

If the thugs would keep their noses out of 'health care,' they wouldn't have to pay for anything. Anyway, big people do live much longer.

It’s gross seeing how fat many people are when you go to the mall now.

If you put Ann Coulter between two of them it would be like a toothpick between two pears, lol.

“Blogs written by fat people — and it’s fine to use the word”

Yes it is fine to use the word. I am FAT. I am not “overweight,” I am a fat man that probably ought to drop about 30 lbs.

"They argue that Americans are not that much larger than they used to be and that being fat in and of itself is not necessarily bad for you."

Bull. When I was in grade school, there may have been one or two (although I only remember one who had a glandular disease) obese children in the entire school, which meant pretty much half of a county. Now the one or two number actually applies to thin children. Anybody seen the parking lot of your local Wal Mart lately? Fat folks everywhere.

Blogs written by fat people — and it’s fine to use the word, they say — have multiplied in recent months, filling a virtual soapbox known as the fatosphere, where bloggers calling for fat acceptance challenge just about everything conventional medical wisdom has to say about obesity.

Smart, sassy and irreverent, bloggers with names like Big Fat Deal, FatChicksRule and Fatgrrl (“Now with 50 percent more fat!”) buck anti-obesity sentiment.

With names like that their soapbox ought to be called the blob-o-sphere. Sheesh.

We are seeing fat people paying the price (literally) for their fat - buying two seats on an ariline for example. At some point this economic model will be expanded to things like healthcare. They may not like it, but I don’t know how our health care system can afford American’s ‘lifestyle choices’ moving forward. Besides there is nothing cool or hip about being obese.

For innumerable generations, ancient man was afflicted with parasites. So long, in fact, that throughout the human genome, there are any number of adaptations to them.

In fact, many of us are so genetically predisposed to having parasites, our immune systems have a hard time adapting to life without them. That is, the *absence* of parasites may result in our own immune systems harming us, with responses to parasites that are not needed.

And number of autoimmune related conditions, from arthritis to asthma, to obesity, may be primarily because we no longer have parasites. So people with dire medical conditions related to this have gone to far as to consume sanitized pig whipworms, that can only live in the human body for a short time; or hookworms, for life threatening asthma. Having worms is better than dying.

But while parasites might help us, they are not the root cause of our problems. Our own bodies are misbehaving.

That is why we should look forward to the creation of “The Republican Pill”, which will allow us to eat what we want, yet stay trim and with toned muscles.

I call it the Republican Pill, because not only would Republicans get great enjoyment out of being able to eat what they wanted to eat, from Big Macs to Gourmand cuisine; but also because Democrats would hate it.

Democrats already curse Americans for being gluttons, eating unhealthy, if good tasting food, enjoying meat instead of tofu and bean sprouts, and generally liking their food. A Republican Pill would drive them mad with rage and frustration.

Let us not forget that the Fed changed the definition of "overweight" several years ago. Kate Moss on a crack binge could now be labeled "mildly obese".
Let's call it "Fat by Fiat".

Btw, not to hijack the thread, but they do the same thing with the "poverty" level. The income bar keeps going up. Now what's that about a shrinking middle class again?

They argue that Americans are not that much larger than they used to be
and that being fat in and of itself is not necessarily bad for you.

I'm all for people choosing to do what they want, short of violating the rights of others, but when you're wrong you're wrong. There are a lot more fat people now than there used to be. It is true that being fat isn't necessarily bad for you but it quite often is. But that's no one's business but the fat persons. It most emphatically is no business of the government.

Being fat as one ages is no fun. I would imagine all these fat people are young and haven't yet felt the pain of disintegrating knees and hips. When they're short of breath walking down the grocery aisle and their feet hurt and they have trouble doing even the most minor physical task, I hope they remind themselves how "cool" it is to be fat.

And I say this as a 6'7" 290lb 42 year-old who needs to lose 90 lbs before I decide on knee replacement.
