This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:
"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of Americas industrial base."
"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.
If Hunter endorsed ANY of the remaining candidates, it would be a kerfuffel.
Completely agree. The campaign will flush out where these guys really stand and see who stands for Conservatism and who does not. Just ‘cause I always HAVE voted for the GOP (and am pretty active in the party), doesn’t mean I will just vote for anyone with and R next to their name. I’ve been burned before (I live in PA - thank you Specter).
McCain is Bob Dole redux; Guiliani is a cross-dressing liberal; and Romney's religion will hold him back across the 50 states.
That leaves Huckabee who has a good record as a successful governor; a solid marriage and family; and as you say, a "vision and a plan of action."
If the computerized voting machines aren't already set for Hillary's ascent, then Huckabee has a great chance to defeat the dims in November.
VERY disappointed!
Exactly. Hunter endorsing the Huckster? I still can't believe it...
Love him or hate him, there has been one candidate who has staked out clear positions and stuck to them. That is Giuliani. You have to respect the guy’s consistency.
I have no clue now what Hunter’s principals are.
Well if it is based on “principle” it is the principle where you are weak on illegal immigration, weak on reducing taxes (the fair tax is just a convenient place to hide and not take a stance). This really surprises me about Hunter.
It makes me wonder if Huckabee really is the image he’s been promoting! If Hunter thought he saw honesty, I have to believe him.
I’m still not voting for Huck because he’s a nanny-stater antibusiness populist.
Its going to be based on his elimination of the other candidates on principle. He can’t support McCain (the author of amnesty), he can’t support Giuliani who never met an abortion he didn’t like, and he won’t support Romney due to Romney’s refusal to make a public statement against the Bain Capital deal which Hunter believes will sell out American Security to China. He also agrees with Huckabee on China, the Fair Tax, Abortion, and the protection of marriage. Huckabee is also now running on a conservative immigration platform (even though his record as governor was abysmal) which is more than most of the other candidates are doing now. Huckabee is not a great candidate but Hunter didn’t have a lot to choose from.
He should have not endorsed anyone and just gone back home. I guess it’s friendship thing or something. Kind of like Thompson not attacking McCain during the debates. As far as I know, Fred hasn’t endorsed McCain and I hope he stays out of it until the nomination is over!
Fortunately, it looks like Huckabee is going broke and losing Florida!
Yeah, I did...
Which is why I haven’t supported Duncan either...
I know a tax and spend statist when I see one.
Duncan Hunter isn’t a Limited Government Conservative either.
And his endorsement is a long shot BEG for VP in case Huck pulls off the unthinkable.
It’s pathetic posturing at it worst... he’s another Tancredo betraying all those suckers who have supported him even though he had NO Chance.
Bitter medicine and the fans are not taking it well.
I’m glad, for once, I saw something like that coming.
I started noticing there was nothing behind the posturing after Hunter had done a couple of debates.
He really hasn’t done that much as a Congressman, but got in the news about Dubai Ports and the border fence.
Meanwhile, he was a big spender.
That’s all.
Well, yer guy Mitt... I’m not convinced his change is the real deal either.
But I will say this... if he handles his defeat well.. and if he continues to SAY and then DO the right things for the next 4 years...
He will be the one I support to oust Hillary.
But between you me and the lurkers... I think he’s gonna pull a Steve Forbes on us come his last day in this race.
No, Romney’s already doing far better than Forbes... doesn’t have that psycho stare... and Steve, by the way, is an advisor to the Giuliani campaign.
Romney’s going all the way. I don’t believe that Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton stuff.
:-)
The only reason I never fully backed Hunter was that, as a good party man, he would probably end up endorsing a GOP candidate that I wouldn’t support. I actually expected him to go for Guiliani or Romney.....
At least I might supress my gag reflex enough to vote for Huckabilly in the general election against HillObamaJohn. Maybe......
Interesting, seeker_two. Besides Romney, I haven’t said absolutely No to any of the other Final Four, but my heart wouldn’t be in it for McCain, that’s for sure.
Well, compared to McCain and Giuliani, Huckabee is certainly the best of a bad lot, maybe marginally acceptable for some.
There's no way I'd ever contemplate supoporting either of the other two rinos with contributions, get-out-the-vote election day effort, or my vote.
Huckabee is at best a distant maybe. But it looks far more likely that I'll be sitting this one out.
One word. Betrayal.
When the CFR pulls the strings of their puppets, they dance accordingly, as when Fred Thompson dropped out like a good boy wnen told to do so.
