I think a case can be made that Fred was running for a VP slot all along.
To: enough_idiocy
Fred could barely muster the energy to run for the presidency. He couldn’t care less about being number two.

This would seal the deal for McCain if Thompson became his running mate because all GOP Conservatives that have said they would never vote for McCain would suddenly forget they ever said it.

Fred’s job is to continue to expose McCain’s anti-constitutional streak and his penchant to think like
a democrat!!

With no real conservatives running for President, the non-RINO Republicans will now shift their focus to House and Senate races, in hopes of minimizing the damage from whichever moron we end up with.

Just ain’t gonna happen. Thompson will be nobody’s choice for VP. He brings nothing to the table that someone not in the race can bring.

IF Thompson is interested in the Veep slot, the only people he would help are Rudy and Mitt. Of course Mitt's problem is that he seems to be deeply disliked by all of his opponents. And we'll have to see if Rudy's "Hail Mary" pass in Florida keeps him alive.
While Fred and McCain get along well enough, Thompson adds little value to Mr. Maverick. Two terse, grouchy, old, white senators from the West and South... that dog won't hunt.
Maybe I need to start praying for a brokered convention.

Let's give Fred some time to think about it.
And the rest of them are either dealing with preparations for the Thursday debates and the FL primary or figuring out if they are staying in (making deals or whatever).
So let Fred have his time to wind down and be with his family. Is his mother deathly ill or what?

Until now, I haven’t given much credence to the idea of Fred as VP. But, Bill Sammon is a solid reporter.
I think Romney would do well to add Thompson to the ticket. Thompson would add credibility where Romney lacks it, and would unite conservatives behind a single candidate.
Additionally — Thompson is from the South, an area where Romney needs some help.
I’m on board — Romney/ Thompson 2008.
