The most substantive thing I could come up with since hearing the news is ‘square peg...round hole’. It’s really not much deeper than that...

How about your local and state level, how does that look?

I’m not too bad off here in Georgia, some real progress has been made here!

Here in Alabama I have Senators Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby. My congress critter is Mike Rogers a conservative republican. Our county government, pretty much is republican, though I don’t know if they are really RINOs or not. Our governor is a Republican here in Bama. SO, from that point of view, we are in pretty good shape. Oh, and I am a gun owner, armed and fully loaded. So, no matter who becomes the Commissar in Sodom on the Potomac, I will survive or die fighting.

Doomed? Thompson was hardly in the game and got no traction. I fail to see how Thompson dropping out makes much of difference now except in how it affects voter support moving to Huckabee or Romney.

So right now Rudy has no natural base. McCain stole his voters. He’s done.

:) Excellent.

That's a really poor reason to vote for anyone, let alone Paul.

No, its a desperate attempt to keep a dem out of the oval office.

A brokered convention would mean a fractured party

We already have a fractured party. And its fractured because 'conservatives' voted for liberal Republicans. Dems have already won unless the convention becomes brokered. No rhino can win, period, you will never unite the conservative base with a rhino. And no republican can win without the conservative base. Get the picture yet?

Fred was running. He did campaigning all over this country. YOU may not have heard about it on the news, but there were videos on his website, and many Freepers attended campaign rallies for him.

Unfortunately, conservative voters didn't seem to cotton to him, which is interesting, considering they've been asking for someone with strong conservative credentials who could bring in both Republican votes in the primaries, then Independents and Reagan Democrats in the General Election. Fred was perfect on the issues, but when push came to shove, too many conservatives went for flash and polish, and Fred's a serious kind of guy who doesn't go in for the typical campaign tripe.

People need to get over it. Fred Thompson was fool’s gold. Calling everybody a RINO isn’t very constructive, either.

I saw it, right off. What did conservatism really get as a result of this candidacy? Nuttin’ but trouble.

I agree with you. As an aside, I’m quite confident, that I’ve never used the term RINO on this forum :) People do need to let it go, and let go quick...but where to go from here, I don’t have a suggestion.

I want to take a moment to thank you, Extremely Extreme Extremist, and others who are Paul supporters that have defended him and his policies in the face of often vicious attacks.

I love a lot of what Paul represents, and he is saying a lot of things that need to be said. Paul was my candidate of choice for a long time, and while I don’t believe in guilt by association, I do wish he had done more to distance himself from his wackier contingent of supporters; they really do a lot to dilute and distract from his message, sad to say.

Regardless, I hope he stays in it until the end. His voice is a welcome one for those of us who believe limited government and individual liberty are paramount.

Boston, MA – Today, Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on former Senator Fred Thompson withdrawing his candidacy for President of the United States:

"Throughout this campaign, Fred Thompson brought a laudable focus to the challenges confronting our country and the solutions necessary to meet them. He stood for strong conservative ideas and believed strongly in the need to keep our conservative coalition together. Ann and I would like to extend our best wishes to Fred, Jeri and their family and congratulate them on their efforts during this campaign."

This is true. Although Romney is at best a "Johnnie-come-lately" conservative, he doesn't hate us. McCain will antagonize everyone in record time if he's elected.

Yes, McCain doesn't have the temperament to be President.

Actually, that is why Senators make such poor presidential candadates, they get insulated from the people, which is what they are suppose to do, to offset the 'passions' of the House.

They make poor executives.

How anyone can believe this man is conservative, or anything less than a RHINO is beyond me.

Of course Romney doesn't have a super conservative record. He ran Massachusetts for crying out loud! That's what all those links are indicating. But I think he will do more to nominate conservative SC justices, close the borders and lower taxes than the other Republican candidates and certainly compared to Hillary. So I am willing to take my chances in that regard. Elections are about comparative choices. Always.
