Who Should Get the Conservative Vote? (Evangelical for Romney)
News Blaze ^ | January 21, 2008 | Eddie Huff

Posted on 01/21/2008 4:45:42 PM PST by Romneyfor President2008

I was in El Paso, Texas over the Christmas holidays when a pastor and dear friend told me he had expected me to write something about the upcoming Pesidential elections, and particualrly about Mitt romney. I have actually been working on something on this for about 6 months, I have just not felt the time was right to share it. Well I now feel the tiem s right and here it is.

Let me say from the outset that these are my personal views and opinions, and are shared as such. They do not reflect upon any ministry or organization that I may be affiliated with. My views are also from a conservative or Evangelical Christian point of view.

In the Democratic Party we have 2 frontrunners and one candidate that will not quit while in the Republican Party we have 3 or 4 still battling it out. Of these seven leading candidates I have come to the conclusion that Mitt Romney is the best overall candidate from the conservative and Evangelical point of view. I have also come to the conclusion that the only reason that a conservative Christian would have for not vote for Mitt Romney is his Mormon religion, and that is a legitimate concern. So how would I come to the conclusion that Gov. Romney is the best guy, especially since I studied cult apologetics, in seminary, under the late Dr. Walter Martin? For those who do not know or remember him, Dr. Martin was author of The Kingdom of the Cults, which is the bible of cult apologetics. He also founded and hosted the syndicated radio program The Bible answer Man. Oh, and Walter was also my Sunday School teacher for 2 years.

I am a conservative and an evangelical pastor. There is nothing about Romney’s history that qualifies him to be the Republican nominee.

The same is true of the other candidates except for Thompson, now that Hunter has dropped out.

Romney has said the following at various times and places -

Posted on 11/11/2007 8:26:20 AM EST by Josh Painter

“My hope is that, after this election, it will be the moderates of both parties who will control the Senate, not the Jesse Helmses.” - Source

“In my view, it is not a good idea to go into a [Contract With America] like what was organized by the Republican Party in Washington, laying out a whole series of things which the party said, ‘These are the thing’s we’re going to do.’ I think that’s a mistake.” - Source

“Look, I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.” - Source

“I remember in my earliest political experience my father fighting to keep the John Birch Society from playing too strong a role in the Republican Party. He walked out of the Republican National Convention in 1964, when Barry Goldwater said, ‘Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.’ Because he saw that as a tacit approval of the effort the John Birch Society was making to influence the Republican Party. I think that extremists who would force their views on the party and try to shape the party are making a mistake.” - Source

“We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts. I support them. I won’t chip away at them. I believe they help protect us and provide for our safety.” - Source

“Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts. These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.” - Source

“I don’t think [The Brady Bill’s mandated waiting period] will have a massive effect on crime but I think it will have a positive effect.” - Source

“I don’t line up with the NRA.” - Source

“I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life.” - Source

“I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have, since the time when my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, we should sustain and support it. I sustain and support that law and the right of a woman to make that choice.” - Source

“I think it would be a positive thing to have women have the choice of taking morning-after pills….I would favor having it available.” - Source

“There will be children born to same-sex couples, and adopted by same-sax couples, and I believe that there should be rights and privileges associated with those unions and with the children that are part of those unions.” - Source

“All people should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation.” - Source

“Mitt Romney is the best overall candidate from the conservative and Evangelical point of view”

If you “sit this one out” we can thank you for Hillary Clinton as president - and that’s exactly how we got Bill Clinton - good stubborn bull-headed people sitting it out. Sheeeesh already.

Does Mitt's plan for illegal immigration offer any form of amnesty? (yes or no)

I think we can all agree that past performance is a guarantee of future results, when it comes to politics.

Romney's record supersedes any platform he's recently adopted in an attempt to persuade people he is a true conservative. It's very easy to shift your position depending on which way the wind is blowing.

If Romney thought that the McCain's Immigration plan was not Amnesty, how can we trust him when he says he doesn't support amnesty? He clearly does not define amnesty the same way most of us conservatives do.

McCain is a liberal RINO.

Romney is not. He’s a fiscal conservative, he is a family man with strong moral value, and is a smart, articulate expounder of the optimistic Reaganite vision for America. He has been consistently and genuinely pro-family and against gay marriage (and for FMA). He will appoint good conservative judges, that is why he got the Bork endorsement. Romney is much better on illegal immigration than pro-amnesty McCain and Huck are, that’s why he got the Tancredo endorsement.

Lastly, he’s the man to navigate through our current financial crisis. We need Romney now more than ever.

That is the same BS that is put out by McCain. So I guess you could say that Willard and McCain are joined at the hip on illegals.

“Fred is my only choice. Otherwise I am just sitting this one out. I am tired of having to settle for 2nd or 3rd choice every year.”
“I gotta say that I have three children who when they don’t get their way sound an awful lot like you. “

DITTOS on this.

I have children. Voting flippantly or not at all is not an option, for my children’s sake.

The most conservative candidate standing in the race right now, who can beat Proamnesty-antiBushtaxcuts-proCO2caps-CFR-RINO John McCain is Mitt Romney.

Fortunately, it is not a ‘lesser of two evils’ choice, because Mitt Romney is the most superb, articulate and smartest candidate running in many years, and the most genuinely family-oriented. For conservatives - he is a more conservative candidate than G W Bush and than we’ve had since Ronald Reagan. He promises to keep a lid on spending, something he did in Massachusetts. He promises to enact tax rates cuts to keep us out of recession. He has good market-oriented answers on energy, healthcare and other Democrat hot-buttons. And he’s prolife and profamily, with a real awesome family to show for it. Maybe that is why the press keep trying to keep him under wraps.

Mitt Romney will make a very good President. Let’s support him.

I have conceded nothing.

My contention here on this thread was that George Bush 1 lost his bid for reelection because of his "no new taxes" pledge.

That was in response to your post concerning that "voters are too easily herded like sheep."

Many "voters" were not sheep in 1992 and we ended up with Clinton.  I'm sorry about that, and I for one am not going to be a part of such an event again. I will not let my vote be compromised, even if the candidates are compromised. I will vote for the lesser of 2 evils. If McCain gets the Republican nod, then I will still vote, but not for him.

I have immunity anyhow. My neigbors are Kool-Aid drinkers, and so my vote never counts.

We can actually thank those who nominate a liberal and expect conservatives to get on board.

I will not get on board. You Rinos will end up having yourselves to blame.

“Mitt has run a strong anti illegal immigration campaign. So either you are lying or you are a dope.”

Get a lot of both from the Mitt-haters.

There is no difference between the three, all want amnesty they just want to call it by a different name. All three are liberal Rino's. As Rush said today, maybe time to set one out.

Good points from the article:

“If we leave the social and moral issues for a moment, and look to the fiscal side of things, Mitt Romney comes out even farther ahead of his competition from a conservative point of view. On the Democratic side all 3 candidates want to repeal the Bush tax cuts, returning to the former, and higher tax rates. They also want to stop a border fence and legalize the 12 million illegal aliens here now. Social programs would also skyrocket. On the GOP side, Senator McCain has opposed President Bush’s tax cuts on more than one occasion, and he co-authored the McCain/Feingold legislation which has given groups such as Moveon.org and the numerous other George Soros, 527 groups, their power. He also co-authored the McCain/Kennedy immigration bill, which would legalize the 12 million or so illegal aliens in our country. While Rudy Giuliani does support President Bush’s tax cut plan, he did raise taxes in New York City and made it a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. Governor Huckabee raised taxes numerous times as governor of Arkansas, and has a terrible record on immigration. He even went so far as to offer instate tuition to the children of illegal aliens.

Mitt Romney’s record on the other hand, stands in stark contrast, particularly to Senator McCain’s and 2 of the Democrats, each of whom have spent the bulk of their lives in public office. Governor Romney spent most of his life in the private sector building businesses. He is also responsible for saving and making a great success of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. For those who have forgotten, these Olympics were doomed to failure, due to corruption and financial problems, when Mitt Romney was asked to take over. They turned out to be one of the most successful Winter Olympics ever. He not only made the games a success, but also built lasting facilities that the state of Utah is still reaping tourism benefits from today.”

Ironic! You have spent the last 6 months bashing Mormonism and bashing Mitt because of his religion, so your “I am not going to be reduced to a single-issue voter “ claims are two-faced, as you have been a ‘one-issue’ (anti-mormon) anti-Mitt poster all along. You bring other issues up as post hoc rationalizations for your real ‘problem’ with Mitt.

In contrast, we have the wisdom of this evangelical’s endorsement of Romney on the topic:

“Again, the only reason that I can think of for not voting for Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate for president is his Mormon faith. We can try and color it, or dress it up as much as we want, but that would be the only reason that I can see. With that I want to leave you with a thought from scripture.

In Mark 9:38-40 we find something very interesting. I think it gives us a view of what Jesus might say on this subject as he had a similar situation arise on a question of faith.

“Teacher,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”

“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us.”

Maybe Mitt Romney’s theology is not right, and as the late Rev. Jerry Falwell said about him shortly before his death, “we are not being asked to vote for a Bishop. I could not vote for a Mormon as Bishop, but I think I can vote for a Mormon as President.” Should we tell him to stop trying to heal our land or drive demons out of it because “he is not one of us?”

Let us go beyond the religion to the faith. Religion is reactionary and full of fear while faith is full of vision, hope and promise. Do not accept my words, or anyone else’s words at face value, rather seek the truth for yourselves. I trust that as you seek the truth you will find it.”

You are completely wrong. I thought you were better than to trade in falsehoods.

Mitt-bashers credo: a lie a day keeps the Mormon at bay.

None are 100% conservative.

But Romney is 80% conservative

McCain and Huck are 60% conservative

Obama and Hillary are 5% conservative

I’d rather get 80% of what I want than 60%, or 5%.

Romney said that the Bush Immigration plan did not amount to amnesty. Here is a quote of Romney talking about it: "That's very different than amnesty, where you literally say, 'OK, everybody here gets to stay.' It's saying you could work your way into becoming a legal resident of the country by working here without taking benefits and then applying and then paying a fine."

Amnesty by a different name is still amnesty. Just like the Jorge, McCain, and Huckabee. Willard supports and encourages illegals to come into the country.
