"...As soon as Thompson entered the race, analysts began wondering aloud why he got in, saying that he didn't show the fire in the belly that's necessary to run successfully for president. The image of Thompson as a laid-back slowpoke became fodder for late-night television comedians.
Woodard said that Thompson finally appeared to hit his stride on the stump in the Palmetto State, speaking to overflow crowds in the past week.
"Here's what happens when you're a candidate -- you get better as you go along," he said. "The problem is Huckabee's got a three-month jump on him. Fred is a good, tough candidate. If he was like this in September, things might be different."

What?
Near as I can tell, assuming you've written Fred off, your three candidates are Romney.
Not entirely bad, but be careful what you wish for.
That was great!!
U.S. conservatism is truly finished for the long-term! Get used to it and then move to another country in order to try to make that country truly conservative instead. Anything else politically is just a waste of time.
The last of the positive things to say about Fred Thompson just before he truly gets out of the Presidential race. It’s going to happen, and his mother is also seriously ill. The MSM will just intensify their negativism towards Thompson if he does choose to keep on running for the Presidency while his mother continues to be extremely ill. This is truly a lose-lose situation for Fred Thompson!
Thanks. It was fun.
It would be interesting to start an individual thread like that, but what rhymes with Romney?
Just my opinion, of course, but Gramm’s bid for the GOP nomination in 1996 was a spectacular failure. His campaign raised about $20 million, and he won a grand total of eight delegates - finished 5th in the Iowa caucus and bailed out before the NH primary. I have met Phil Gramm, and he has the charisma of a wet dog. Unfortunately, in our media-driven age, charisma matters. Plus, there is something about him (and Newt) that repulses many of the conservative women I know.
Yes, yes, he acknowledged that he’s ugly. I heard him say, “I’m ugly. So when some bimbo pops up and claims to have had sex with me, ain’t no one gonna believe it.
Was Nixon prettier than Humphrey?
LOL. That’s a good example of a race that probably wouldn’t happen now; neither one had an ounce of charisma. Eisenhower certainly wasn’t handsome in late adulthood, but he was charismatic. Dewey was handsome, I am told, but not charismatic - famously derided as the “man on top of the wedding cake.”
I agree.
There once was a man known as Romney
Filled with zest, like a bowl of warm hominy.
Poetic license :-)
We should take it on the road.
I like the beat!
