ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul today issued the following statement reflecting on the struggle for civil rights and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. :

“It is especially fitting that we take the time to reflect on one man’s struggles to defend our Constitutional freedoms during this primary election season. January 15 was the birthday of the great freedom fighter, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and on Monday, we honor him nationwide for his sacrifice and love of liberty for all people.

“To me, the timing is more than a coincidence. The American people, regardless of color or creed, have the opportunity to choose a candidate who will uplift the ideals for which Dr. King fought—and died.

“The fight for freedom—the preservation of our civil rights—is the fight of our lives. Sadly, after Dr. King’s passing we are faced with a violation of our civil rights in the same vein as Jim Crow: The Patriot Act. I have stood against this and all unconstitutional violations of American’s civil rights, and will continue Dr. King’s charge as President.

Dr. King would be disappointed in our current administration for more than its continued disregard for civil rights, as he stated ‘a nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.’ We need to change our interventionist foreign policy, and take care of our brothers and sisters at home. Our nation is in a crisis: we are spending billions on war overseas while those around us are suffering and losing jobs, homes, and hope. It is inexcusable; we must solve the economic crisis at home and bring hope to America.

“Dr. King’s heroic actions should resonate with us today, as we recognize that our votes strengthen the fight for our civil rights. Liberty is the true antidote to racism, and freedom-- limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights—can uplift us all.”

Dr. Ron Paul is a ten-term Texas congressman seeking the Republican nomination for President of the United States.

Would you listen to a poet? Or a prophet journal all this world's injustice? Or try and stop it?

No.

Ron Paul, fighting for your right to produce racist literature!

It’s funny all of the Paul supporters have been so scammed, and they refuse to admit it....even to themselves.

Let’s remember the “programs of social uplift” that MLK advocated. He wanted a guaranteed income for the poor and $500 million in reparations to be given for descendents of slaves over a 10 year period. Are these the type of things Dr. Paul is advocating when he genuflects to the memory of his newfound hero?

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record:
He has NEVER voted to raise taxes. He has NEVER voted for an unbalanced budget. He has NEVER voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership. He has NEVER voted to raise congressional pay. He has NEVER taken a government-paid junket. He has NEVER voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

That is because he has never done anything.
Except put in earmarks.

Ron Paul issued this statement in an blatent attempt to try to distract from the awful anti- Martin Luther King comments his newsletter repeatedly stated during the 1980’s. To read exerpts go to FOX online. The newsletter had his name on it and he allowed it to go on and on.

With this statement today - Paul becomes the largest flip flopper the world has ever seen !

Notice how RuePaul uses the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther Kings to promote his candidacy. And notice how the campaign issued the statement on 1/20/2008, five days after Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. One would think that if the real purpose of the statement was to honor Dr. King, it would have been issued on, or just before, his birthday.

A flagrant political act by someone who’s possibly a friend (if not sympathizer) of Truthers and neo-Nazis.

Statements like this are going to hurt his contributions. I am sure many of the KKK pledges he received will be retracted.

The stuff that Ron Paul allowed to be published in the newsletter bearing his name is terribly racist.

Even if he was not actively running the newsletter - he had a responsiblity to control anything that has his name on it. That means he accepted staff or writers with this viewpoint. He didn’t fire them. He allowed them to continue.

And Paul claims total ignorance - that is a sign that he does not have the administrative or moral ability to control even a little newsletter.

This is major folks. Paul is going down!!!!!

According to FOX NEWS Ron Paul . .

. . doesn't exist except as a footnote.

And you'd take everything that Hillary-loving outfit puts on their overloaded screen as revealed truth?

Perhaps. But only if the KKK'rs have a clue. And I have my doubts.

Pat Paulsen would get more votes than Ron Paul.

Yep, I doubt he’ll drop out though. He’ll stay in and continue to siphon the votes of true conservatives like Thompson. His supporters are rabid!

"He’ll stay in and continue to siphon the votes of true conservatives like Thompson."

I disagree. No true Conservative in his right mind would consider voting for a lunatic libertarian (redundant statement) like Ron Paul.

It's mixing apples and oranges.
