Who will Fred Thompson endorse?

Posted on 01/19/2008 7:00:56 PM PST by Delacon

I wanted him to pick up some momentum with every good thing that has come out about Fred these past several weeks. I insisted he wasn't a stalking horse. I will never believe that he was. I think his run is over. I hope he does too. If he bows out, who will he endorse? Some will say his longtime friend and some say probable republican nominee McCain? I'm hoping it will be the guy who closest represents the conservatism I've admired in Fred Thompson. Not McCain, not the Huckster, and not Rudy. I hope its Romney that Fred Thompson endorses.

Hunter should endorse Fred and Fred should keep going.

Yes. Those two are fantastic.

Fred isn’t formally out yet but he is good as gone. Thanks for trying, Fred.

Fred can’t say the things he has said and then do a 180 and support McCain. How anybody can be concerned about illegal immigration, which Fred says he is, and still vote for McCain - or Huckabee - well, I can’t understand that at all. And beyond immigration and border security, there are many other issues where McCain fails the conservative, America first test. So no, no way can Fred endorse McCain.

Romney is the only sensible, America first choice for Fred to go to. Fred says it’s all about what’s good for America and his daughter, etc. We shall see if he has been BS’ing us all along or not.

Doesn’t matter who he endorses. Fred voters are southerners or pro-lifers or both. And the bulk of them will go to Huckabee. Which is why Fred won’t drop out, if he doesn’t. He knows his staying in helps McCain, while his dropping out would help Huck.

I know everyone here predict Fred to endorse McCain. But no one predicted Tancredo endorse Romney or Pat Robertson endorsing Rudy.

Fred has too much integrity to endorse someone who is bad for conservatism.

A broken heart looms.

Maybe so. But if McCain or Huck get the nod, I’m not voting for the GOP anyway, so heartbreak really isn’t a big deal.

Just a moment ago McCain said he hadn’t changed his position on immigration!

And the brilliant Republican voters in SC said that illegal aliens were the second biggest problem facing the Country.

No, that would be incorrect. McCain has flip flopped consistently on the campaign trail. He now says he wants the Bush Tax cuts made permanent (and he voted against them TWICE). He wants to close Gitmo (Fred disagrees). Ideologically Fred is much closer to Mitt than Fred. If he endorsed McKennedy then he lied to everyone.

That just about nails it.

Any Thompson supporter who goes to Huckabee was supporting Thompson for the wrong reasons. There is a huge gulf between Conservative Federalism and Christian Socialism.

Oh there are soooo many reasons for not liking the Huskster that have nothing to do with Fred Thompson supporters sour grapes.

>> You are delusional if you this FRs will not say anything about a FT endorsement of JM. There will not be enough bandwidth to cover what will be said on this site. <<

Ha! I serious doubt that.

Fredheads are notorious on this site for ranting and raving that candidate A is committing "treason" for doing a certain thing, but when Fred does the EXACT SAME THING, they shrug their shoulders, dismiss it as "nobody's perfect", and move on (or alternatively, insist Fred didn't do that and you're "lying" by reporting actual facts to them). A few monthes ago, they'd end with the cutesy little phrase that you must "Fear Fred" (this was before Fred started tanking in the polls.)

Exhibit A - It's discovered that Romney filled out a pro-choice questionaire in 2002 and said he was okay with the status quo on Roe v. Wade. Fredheads denounce him as a closet pro-abortion RINO. It's discovered that Fred Thompson filled out a pro-choice questionaire in 1996 and said he was okay with the status quo on Roe v. Wade and supported Title X funding. Fredheads praise Fred for his "Federalism"

Exhibit B - Huckabee's track record shows he was weak on cracking down on illegal aliens while in office, and supported amnesty as recently as 2006, but now says he's against the Senate amnesty proposal. Fredheads denounce him as a illegal-alien loving, open-borders socialist. Fred's track record shows he was weak on cracking down on illegal aliens while in office, and supported amnesty as recently as 2006, but now says he's against the Senate amnesty proposal. Fredheads attack actual voting records and statements that show Fred rewarded illegals as "lies" and praise his "Minuteman style" new stance on immigration.

Exhibit C - McCain leads the effort to pass McCain-Feingold, and is one of the key figures in getting the bill out of the Senate. Fredheads denounce the deal as "unforgiveable assault on our Republican", call McCain as a "scumbag traitor who destroyed freedom of speech". Fred leads the effort to pass McCain-Feingold, and is one of the key figures in getting the bill out of the Senate. Fredheads say Fred had really good intentions and was simply "trying to do something about all the corruption in politics at the time".

Exhibit D - Lindsey Graham, despite having a 91% conservative voting record, is chums with McCain with Senate and endorses him for President. Fredheads denounce Graham as McCain's homosexual lover and future V.P. Fred Thompson, despite having a 86% conservative voting record, was chums with McCain in the Senate and already endorsed him for President for eight years ago...

If Fred bails, then I’ll have to jump on the Huckabee bandwagon. He is far from perfect, but at least he is a true social conservative and I can trust him on the judges he would appoint.

That is exactly right. Anyone but McCain. At least Huck cares so much about social issues that he will ONLY consider conservative judges.

"...Fox is having an “I Love John McCain Hour” right now..."

Yep. I have lost all respect for Fox and their BS slogans: "We Report, You Decide"? It's anything but that these days at FNC.

...because conservatives will feel like the fix is in.

Wake up -- The fix IS in! McCain is Dubya's choice.

Fred's role was to keep anyone more conservative than McCain (ie. Huck) from winning in SC. He didn't campaign with any earnest anywhere else. He went on the warpath against Huckabee but barely even criticized McCain even when polls showed McCain leading in SC. As soon as Romney was clued in to the fix he went to Nevada.

By winning SC, McCain is now the candidate to beat. Fred will endorse McCain, and the train will roll on. Just watch.

Personally, I would rather have Huckabee, Romney, even Rudy instead of McCain.

Are you INSANE?????

No, he is a huckster BUT from what I have seen of the Hucksters "plant rumors - then deny" technique, calling them insane might be close...

They post the same lie and expect someone at some point to start believing it.

over and over and over and over and over.

Sad. It must keep them awake at night.

Well then, Fred got his third we expected and now I am off to the sack.

Later.
