Video: Rush Limbaugh Asks Evangelicals to Look at Fred Thompson
Fred08.com ^ | 1/7/07 | Rush Limbaugh

"My question for you evangelicals is this. If you’re looking for a real conservative, why are you supporting Huckabee? He’s completely discredited himself. What about Fred Thompson? If you’re looking for a real conservative. Huckabee is constantly engaging in class warfare against the producers. This laid-off line, it’s an attack on Romney, but it’s an attack on producers. It’s an attack on employers. It’s pure populism. He does oppose school choice! You don’t get the NEA endorsement in New Hampshire by supporting school choice."

A powerful group of children who would cut off their nose to spite their face. Fred embodies qualities all conservatives can rally around.

Not according to the evangelicals. Rubbing their noses in it is not going to change the matter. Better to support a different candidate that they would go for (Pssst! Hunter).

To answer the question:

Many don't believe Fred can win and don't want to be stuck with one of the other three RINOs that are all hostile toward the values social conservatives hold dear.

And, Huckabee might have the best record on social issues of any Republican candidate ever to run for the Presidency.

Your uncle spoke well of Romney’s father, therefore, you are voting for Romney. Jesus Christ, I need a drink.

Understandable, my son, and after reading that, so do I.

I would vote for Huckabee in a general election BUT the primaries are the place to investigate a person’s record and his stands on issues. If anyone reads what Fred writes (he is a substance candidate) or listens to what he says, he is a solid conservative. Huckabee is a social conservative (good) but after reading his Foreign Affairs article, he’s as bad as Obama and Clinton...truly, he should have NOT written that piece until he had a better grasp of the positions. He was fully on board with McCain on the immigration issue. To beat Obama or Clinton, we need someone who is outside the Washington circle (several Republicans fit the bill) AND has the experience and ability to articulate their positions well. Huckabee is a good talker, but has not been good about specifics at ALL.

I have pointed out the NEA endorsement, but they are pretty blind except to the fact that he’s one of them. The mantra seems to be “He’s one of us.”

I am pretty involved in homeschool circles statewide in NC and among the different homeschool groups I have spoken to the Baptist Evangelical vote seems to be going Huck, the
Mormon vote Mitt and the secular vote Ron Paul. The Ron Paul support among non-religious homeschoolers surprised me, but I guess it makes sense. Obama, Clinton and Edwards haven’t done anything to woo homeschoolers, whereas Huck and Paul have.

- Thompson would be much tougher to beat than Huckabee. I’m tied to Romney myself - great uncle used to work for his daddy in MI, but Mitt was just a kid at the time - but I’d be for Thompson otherwise.

Let me see if I got this straight:

You're basing your vote, in a very important election, upon the fact that your great uncle used to work for a candidates daddy?!

Man we're screwed.

OK, so what political positions does Mike Huckabee have that you want to camp out on? Immigration? Taxes? National Security?

How about three?

What I am saying is that once you scratch under the Christian paint you've got a populist/liberal politician. If you think asking folks to move from heart to head is condescending, I ask you to reconsider.

God gave us the ability to critically think about issues as well as experience the emotions. That's what I am suggesting you do - put it all in gear.

But you should be able to answer the question.

You may not like the way I said what I did, but what was the content of what I said? You didn't answer that, just how it was posed (your opinion).

Here's my thesis: Huckabee is a Baptist pastor, but a Liberal politician.

You know for a fact Thompson does not follow the tenants of his faith? Please enumerate them, careful it might sound like the 80% of evangelicals that are supporting Huck.

Of course I don't know. But the evidence that the evangelicals are looking for to identify "practicing" have been denied by Fred out of his own mouth... Namely that he does no go to church, and that his faith would not be a big part of his campaign.

Those two points alone = big turn-off for the Christian crowd.

Lets not forget the “Im not going to air this negative ad, but take a look at it anyway” move.

Huckabee has a used car salesman ethos that is worse than Bill Clinton’s.

At least Bill didnt waive the Baptist Preacher thing around, while being underhanded.

Huckabee hides behind the cross and is using it to dupe people into believing he has principles when he clearly doesnt

What would Jesus do?

Establish the throne of David in Jerusalem, and America would finally receive her King.

Ya but that wouldn't require a vote. :-)

Once they get past the Baptist paint and examine his record, the "he's one of us" will disappear.

I'd love to have a conservative Christian in the White House.

But Huckabee isn't a conservative Christian.

Sometimes Rush’s ego is a bit much. No one should take marching orders from Rush; even with his valuable contributions to conservatism.
Rush seems miffed that Huck hasn’t shown him the proper amount of respect.

Well, let’s be fair. The GOP presented evangelicals an openly pro-abortion frontrunner. It’s unsurprising that the equal and opposite reaction is someone like Huckabee.

If Huck is the nominee, unfortunately I will have to go third party. But I’m not going to blame folks whom the GOP backed into a corner.

If Huckabee is the nominee, and especially if Huckabee were to win in the general, Ed Rollins will have been proved right about the Reagan coalition being dead.

Wow, that’s a leap. Explain to me what Duncan Hunter and the Huckster have in common!

They both attended the Values Voter's debate. Thompson didn't think it was important enough for him to bother with. Now, to the zillion other people who have responded to me, I'm here briefly and now I'm leaving again. I don't have time to answer everyone.

You’re right.

Meanwhile, many of us small government types don’t like Giuliani any more than we like Huckabee. I’m feeling *really* irrelevant. /kinda kidding :)

Dear Rush, Megadittoes. Typin' to ya with my currently nicotine stained fingers from my Western command center.

Thanks for the invite to share your support for Fred Thompson. But after surveying the political terrain I think that casting a vote for Thompson would be as useless as voting for Ronald Reagan, as they both appear to be in similar states of decomposition.( I know you appreciate irreverent humor Rush)

But seriously, when is your guy going to make some noise? I know he was more or less drafted to run, but does he expect to be coronated as well? Why isn't he campaigning and winning elections like Huckabee? Why isn't he making appearances on national television the night before elections like Huckabee? Why isn't he seeking the exposure necessary to make himself a viable candidate like Huckabee? Why isn't he demonstrating a will to win like Huckabee?

And Rush, doesn't Thompson know anything about retail politics? His answer at the debate about his differences with Obama amounted to a neanderthalic "liberal bad". In essence he said that Obama has adopted the plank of every liberal special interest group. But that is too general. In contrast, Huckabee was far more specific and enumerated the differences on abortion, same-sex marriage, the 2nd amendment, federalism, national defense, and on and on.

We need someone who is going to be able to communicate these differences, spell them out, and match the energy that the opposition is going to bring. The sleepwalker may have great principles and qualities, but he is not the man to represent the republican party this time.
