Fred Thompson has been understandably frustrated with the media's obsession with "process" and horserace stories, particularly when media outlets fanned false rumors that he was ready to get out of the race. So Team Thompson is understandably happy with this exchange from NBC's Today Show, in which he refused to engage speculation about the source of anti-Thompson rumors and told Lester Holt "I owe you nothing."
“Down with the drive by media!”
Well stated.
I think Fred got halfway there today. He needs to call the press on their only covering the negative and horse-race side of his campaign—getting out a specific and the cost as he did, but then he has to lighten up significantly and interject the positive side of his platform in its stead. Turn the question around to Mr/Ms Media in complimenting them on really wanting to give coverage to that message and his appreciation of them for giving him the opportunity.
Tricky stuff but I think he can do it.
But I also blame the larger media for picking up and running with unsubstantiated innuendo, such as that from Politico, the evening before and day of the first caucus.
Shame on them, think of how much unsubstantiated Internet rumor they don’t report on and how they chose to broadcast this one repeatedly on the day of the vote.
Except that is not what he said.
The media stands on my last nerve and I am sick of them. The media needs to wipe their mouth. They have bull on their lips.
His exact words are not important. What’s important is the image he projected, as evidenced by posts on this thread, that he is hostile to “the media.”
This is interesting. The media is the new target, replacing the “Inside the Beltway Elites.”
I wish he'd been more explicit, though. Something along the lines of...
I'm not going to answer who it was. That's the very question the media should have asked, right after they confirmed it was false by asking my campaign! That was the real story. I'm certainly not going to do your job for you after the fact.
MSM to Fred - “We’re going to screw you over all we can regardless.”
Fred is right on this.
It’s refreshing when Fred or anyone else tells the media to shove it.
But he still has to “play” enough to be let into the game. Otherwise he has an uphill battle. Time will tell how it plays out.
Is Lester Holt the talking head who looks like he has a bad case of lockjaw?
Ummmm... to talk over the press and directly to the people.
LLS
Unfortunately of all people Michelle Malkin ran with the story too without update or retraction.
I absolutely love Fred for taking on the media! They SCREWED him, all of them, for going nationwide with Romney's rumor without checking it out.
Also note that the media has not gone much with the story of the rumor. Imagine if the rumor had been about Obama. They'd still be talking about the dirty tricks.
Please put me on the list. I love Fred Thompson, and I truly think he is the right “MAN” for the job.
Fox news Martha, just had a guest on talking about each GOP candidate and the greatest obstacle to them winning.....Male guest said “for Fred it is that he came out and said he did not want to be president.”
And the other candidates do not have the cojones to stand up to the media. So how will they do it to our enemies? Things that make you go hmmm...
Tread lightly, Fred!
Nixon showed contempt for the MSM and made fools of them with the “Checkers” speech. It took the b*stards many years, but they got him in the end.
