OK. First off let me apologize for the term, it was over the top.
I’m not saying all fundies think like this, but a large chunk - the Huckabee type, are NOT conservatives. They’re religious populists.
If that’s what is dominating the GOP, religious populism that ignores the following tenets of conservatism:
liberty
Consitutionalism
Strong Defense
Low Taxes
Small Government
Then the GOP isn’t my party any more.
Yes, the evangelicals are an important part of the base. But they at least used to pretend to also support conservative policies. Apparently, all that matters is he smile and proclaim he’s a good Christian Man, and he can sit there with an open copy of “The Communist Manifesto” and they’ll still vote for him.
I am with you 100% on that. I believe it was a vast mistake for both Romney and Huckabee to tout religion in order to win in Iowa. That makes them both emotion-pandering cartpet baggers. Its going to back fire bigtime on them, and you and I are but two who will make sure that happens. We are legion.
I mean fancy this:
Reporter: "Mr Huckabee whats you position on illegal alien amnesty?"
Huckabee: " Glory Hallelujah!"
Reporter: "A short supplemental question, what do you think of the premptive strike strategy on terrorists in order to secure the Wests oil supply in the Persian Gulf States?"
Huckabee: " Praise the Lawd!"
As you can see, when Huckabee comes East, that shite won't wash even two pegs in a basket, even though it worked in corn husker territory.

Well, at least I’ve made clear in my previous posts that I make being a Christian the *first criteria* — but — not the last criteria. After one is a Christian, then I can go down the political list of things to considers.
And you’ll find that most conservative Christians do match up to (for the most part) conservative political values. Perhaps they don’t with all of them, but for the most part they do. AND THEN, they will also have another list of a few additional items that they expect the GOP to carry through on, which may not have historically been part of the GOP. But, that’s the price that the GOP pays for having people who, for the most part, do go along with the GOP agenda.
Just don’t end up alienating the Evangelical vote, because most are “nuts enough” (LOL) to break away and abandon anyone who ends up stomping on the most important values that they have from Christianity. They’ll do it on principle no matter what kind of trouble it creates (and that would create a world of trouble for a lot of people...).
