NEW YORK (AFP) - A New York City tourist attraction, the carriage horses lined up at Central Park may soon become a thing of the past if the City Council adopts a proposal to ban it as a tradition cruel to animals.

Council member Tony Avella, a Democrat, introduced the bill in mid-December and Council President Christine Quinn has yet to include it on the board's agenda on an unspecified date, said Avella's press office.

The Horse and Carriage Association of New York representing carriage horse owners has the support of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who considers the quaint transport an integral part of the Big Apple's tourist appeal.

(snip)

Sensing the changing times, small business groups in the city have launched a promising human-powered mode of transport in Manhattan: bicycle rickshaws.

Just not the same.

I don’t see any pleasure or for couples romance in a rickshaw or whatever it is called.

Just need to add the colorful old jeepnies from the Philliapines and it will give New York that 3rd world cultural feeling. : )

Let me get this straight. The rich weenie on the council wants to ban horses from the good life (not much work for a horse in walking with a small carraige), and substitute putting poor people at hard labor peddling a rickshaw.

New York already has those. Theyre called Bicycle Taxis, and the local government saw fit to try to regulate that out of existence.

I guess we’ll just have to eat the horses instead.

Sorry, congress outlawed eating horse meat. We’ll just have to turn them loose in the wilds of Kentuck and let them starve to death. That’s merciful, you know.

Before you get your knickers in a bunch, there was a posting about this very thing. Congress outlawed horse meat. The unintended consequence of this was there was no market for old horses. Therefore old horses were turned loose and left to starve and die.

“Therefore old horses were turned loose and left to starve and die.”

Sort of like what Libs do to their own who turn to conservatism.

my mate weighs in at a bit over 300 lbs and me at a bit under 200. I’d like to see a bicycle guy pull us around NY, or even better, see the rickshaw that would fit us :-)
