The third page of a bogus holiday greeting card received by many South Carolina Republicans this week purported to be from from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney citing controversial passages of the Book of Mormon. The last page features a photograph of a massive temple above a box that says 'Paid for by the Boston Massachusetts Temple' Romney's campaign said it had nothing to do with the cards and a Boston Temple official said the temple had nothing to do with sending mail to South Carolina Republicans, who go to the polls Jan. 19, 2007. I know Gloria Haskins, I would be very surprised if it came from her. And no, I am not a bigot or support anyone that attacks someone politically for their religion. I just find it hard to believe that anyone in the SC Republican party so prominent as Gloria would do this.

From the article: “I don’t think that I could see someone who is a member of a faith so contrary to my faith having my support,” said Haskins, a graduate of Bob Jones University, the Christian fundamentalist college. Haskins is backing Sen. John McCain of Arizona.” This is from Feb 2, 2007.
I don’t know who Gloria is backing now, but when Bob Jones III came out for Romney this fall, Greenville was in all a tizzy about it. I know alot of BJU grads rethought who they were going to vote for after this. There are Romney signs all over the upstate of SC. Most of your upstate voters are Protestant in nature - Baptist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian and I would say majority of them are probably going to vote for Romney because of his morals, not religion. Just as alot of people in the Charleston area are Catholic and Episcopal and that is why Rudy is polling better there. That all being said, I just cannot see Gloria or Cynthia for that matter, stooping this low on a dirty political trick. I guess I could be wrong, but I really believe this was done either by the Dems or Republican political outsider from either Huckabee or Ron Paul's campaigns. Ron Paul has such a radical following here that would be my first guess - he has the money too.

He is the only one who keeps reminding everyone that Mitt’s a Mormon. “Don’t not vote for Mitt just because he’s a Mormon.”

No personal offense intended, but many believe that the Mormon church itself is founded on false documents (the mythical golden disks) and by a convicted con artist.

Personally, I think Mormons do a lot of good, and perhaps there is even some truth in what Joseph Smith made up. Even a con artist can get some truth from god (mysterious ways and all that). But to deny that he was indeed a con artist and did indeed start Mormonism for his own ego and greed, is disingenuous.

To be fair, I should add that I think most faiths and sects were started by con artists looking to make a buck and go on a power trip. Again, that does not mean that they don’t contain truth. So I’m not bashing mormons. If more Americans were like your average Mormon, we’d be much better off... and I am considering voting for Mitt.

Among your interests are "space exploration and drinking". Which were you engaged in when you wrote the above?

That’s an old profile. I don’t drink anymore as I have a medical condition that doesn’t work well with Alcohol. And I don’t work for NASA anymore either, but I do follow the emerging private space efforts closely.

If so (or whoever may be behind this), I sure hope it will be exposed and his or her campaign severly harmed by the backlash.

it will be an “underling” who did not have permission to do it.

I hope they find who pulled this stunt. We don’t need anyone as a candidate who would sanction such.

Next Christmas would be too late. I think it could well have been done by the D’s...Susan Estrich said not too long ago how many Christians she knows that won’t vote for Mitt because he’s Mormon...I didn’t really believe that she knew any Christians, but she wanted to tar them as anti-Mormon.

“Wait, there’s more! The endorsements just keep rolling in. And a leader of a Christian Iowa Group Gives Romney His Vote today.”

I think Flip Wilson endorsed him too.

Thanks. I didn’t know that. But is the quotation accurate and from their scripture?

Seriously, does it really say that in the book of Mormon?

Yes...

I don't know what it says different in the Mormon Bible, compared to the King James version, as I am Protestant, I think the Catholic Bible has a few variations from the Protestant one..but what do i know?

The quotes are not from the "Mormon Bible", which is essentially a "standard" Bible.

The quotes are from the "Book of Mormon" a supposed further testament of Jesus Christ - an entirely separate book from the Bible which is given more weight by most Mormons than the Bible itself. Add that to the "Pearl of Great Price" and "Doctrine and Covenants" and you have the Mormon "scriptures".

Hope this helps out your understanding a bit.

Interetingly, some of the dirtiest political tricks were also carried out in SC in 2000.

LOL. I still have a "Get Out Of Jail Free" monopoly card from the 1988 SC campaign with Dukakis' signature on the card. That was classic.

Most likely someone in one of the campaigns did this without the candidate's knowledge.

Certainly a new all time low in Presidential politics.

You think this is worse than the Bush DUI and cocaine story right before the election? Or worse than the little girl plucking petals from a daisy that turned into countdown to a nuclear explosion the LBJ camp used in 1964?

I doubt this would make the top ten.

I nominate Dan Rather’s and Mary Mape’s phony Air National Guard story!
