If I'm the guy in the truck, I think I'd call 911 and then shoot rather than the reverse.
Personally I would have called 911 and then pulled the gun and told them to back off. I'm not really buying this guy's self-defense story.

I would have tossed the phone to the wife, simultaneously unholserting the weapon, she can call 911.
If no one is with me, weapon comes out first.

I for one carried a Glock long before I carried a cell phone.
