The annual study by the Department of Finance showed that 89,000 more people moved out of California than moved here from elsewhere in the United States. California's population did grow in fiscal 2007 -- but the growth rested on births and the arrival of more than 200,000 immigrants from other countries.
The shift dovetails with the state's weakening economy and is most likely related, said Howard Roth, chief economist for the Department of Finance.
Those who left, Roth said, were fleeing an economy in which just 5,800 jobs per month were created -- down from more than 20,000 per month the previous year. Jobs were lost in housing, finance, construction and other sectors, and key indicators like the number of automobiles sold were also down, he said.
People who are leaving the state, he said, are probably doing so because they believe they'll do better elsewhere.
"If you're someone in finance and you haven't already been laid off . . . or if you've lost your job here and maybe your house, maybe you're thinking that there are better prospects out there in other states," he said.
The trend toward reduced "domestic migration" -- which began in 2005 and has increased dramatically since -- is a sharp turnaround from nearly a decade of sustained population growth.
While the state lost many residents during the economic downturn of the 1990s, people had been steadily moving to California from other states since 1999.

You and a few are the exception, but alot of your fellow Californians are taking their stinking politics with them to other states and turning them blue. Same could be said with people that have left the Peoples Republics of New York and Massachuetts.
I fled California in 2005 after 18 years and moved back to the midwest. As much as I miss Los Angeles I’m actually living in my very own home and not a one bedroom apartment for $1,200+ per month. Also, weeks go by that I don’t hear a car alarm or Spanish being spoken.
Arizona and Nevada need to build a fence immediately! Oregon deserves what they get.
I suspect they are actually seeking "redder" pastures rather than greener, given that California is rapidly transforming itself into a "socialist paradise" as envisioned by the Democrats. Those who are more interested in freedom leave, while those who grew up under socialist governments (most immigrants) won't notice any difference---it'll be "just like home".
I escaped northern California in 1994 after 13 years. I have been back a couple of times on business and I checked and no, I didn’t drop anything there that I really need to go back for.
they moved to New Mexico, which is like Heaven.... and their tax bill just went up...
CA tracks this by CA driver’s license applications and redemptions returned from other states. CA’s Franchise Tax Board keeps track of this to insure they get their Income tax money..so they know the relative earnings of those coming in and those going out.
The fact is the kind of people leaving our retirees, middle class and rich. Plus some working class giving up on trying to make it in CA with unlimited illegal labor.
The net result is CA is loosing conservatives, taxpayers, Republicans, etc. And loosing tax revenue.
The immigrants and births are to non-taxpayers, but users of the system. The DemocRats are staying because they are the teachers, social workers, and govt workers who are growing because of the needs of the immigrants and new births.
Overall it is a bad picture. We will continue to spend winters there, but will be non-residents for tax purposes.
AS soon as I retire Mrs Clamper and I are moving to non-state tax state ... Nevada, Florida, Texax. We as native Californians can’t see living here anymore
Our government has allowed California, my home state, to be overrun and taken over by foreigners and illegal aliens. One of our most beautiful states, with a wonderful climate, has been turned into a Third World hell hole surrounding a few wealthy, fortified enclaves. LA is no longer an American city. My home town, Glendale, has been completely taken over by Armenians, thanks Congressman Lantos. The schools there offer bilingual education in more than 20 different languages. Californians were never asked if they wanted to be invaded and taken over, nor did they ever get a chance to vote on such a development. We were sold down the river by our own government and by elected officials that we voted for. It is a national disgrace.
The only difference between Austin and San Francesspool is Austin doesn't have a Golden Gate Bridge.
Well said. Please do not turn Texas in the Granola state, land of flakes, nuts and fruits.
Right on the money. North eastern liberals are doing the same thing in florida. They eff up their large cities and states with higher taxes and welfare rolls, then move here and start over. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
It also pains me to admit that it is only a matter of time before I leave (wife retires in 4 years), as our kids have already left for dryer hotter pastures.
Nice place to visit, but no way I’d live there.
I escaped in 2001.
I have more money, less driving time, zero stress, etc. I slightly miss all of the public events, etc, but wouldn’t put up with all that is wrong with Cali for just those few things I miss about the place.
In the next decade or two California will officially be a 3rd world nation. About 20% of the population will be living large in gated communities. The rest of the population will be relegated to living in the slums, dodging scumbags and thugs while they seek out the remaining jobs in a collapsing state. If you have the means to leave California, do it now. There is simply no future for California’s middle class.
You can count the “U hauls” leaving the newest Canadian Provence of Michigan too !
Maybe they will buy a clue and figure out why no one else wants to go there.
