Anglicans need not believe in virgin birth
The Australian ^ | December 20, 2007

Posted on 12/19/2007 10:30:00 PM PST by Dundee

THE leader of the world's Anglicans has described the Christmas story of the three wise men as nothing but a "legend" and has said not all followers must believe in the virgin birth of Jesus.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams has picked apart elements of the Christmas story, including how a star rose high in the sky and stood still to guide the wise men to Jesus's birth place.

Stars simply don't behave like that, he told the BBC during an interview.

Dr Williams said there was little evidence that the three wise men had existed at all. Certainly there was nothing to prove they were kings...

He went on to say that while he believed in it himself, new Christians need not leap over the "hurdle" of belief in the virgin birth before they could join the church.

He said the virgin birth was "part of what I have inherited". And on the timing of Jesus's birth, he said the son of God was likely not born in December at all.

"Christmas was when it was because it fitted well with the winter festival," he said.

But Dr Williams said almost everyone agreed on two things - that Jesus's mother was named Mary and his father Joseph.

The archbishop said his approach was to stick strictly to what the Bible says.

That’s okay. The world need not believe in Anglicans.

Going just on his foolish assertions, it appears the heretic has never read or belive the Bible. The Episcopal Church is degenerating so very fast ...

That’s right, if it’s God’s Word, how can you only believe in part of it, God is not 99%, He’s 100 percent.

Maybe it wasn’t a star, you doofus!

The late Karlis Kaufmanis, a University of Minnesota astronomy professor, gave spectacular lectures exploring the astronomical explanations for the Star of Bethlehem that were a beautiful part of Christmas tradition for me and countless others.

I thought the only thing Anglicans had to believe in was marriage annulment.

Some time ago I said Rowan Williams was evil.

I took a lot of heat for it here. People started quoting me scripture about baring false witness against others etc...

Well I think it remains pretty self evident that the man and his hierarchy are not on the side of God.

Here’s one worthy of the Traditional Anglican Ping List. sionnsar, I see you’ve pinged the list lately.

BTW... I have a very funny story about Mary that I heard in my friends Baptist church (a whole story in it’s self there!) last Sunday. The preacher told the story in Luke 1:43... Elizabeth is said to have been a cousin of Mary, and just after the Annunciation, Mary hurried off to the house of Elizabeth and Zechariah. Upon her arrival, the child in Elizabeth’s womb lept for joy, and Elizabeth praised Mary as “the mother of my Lord”
Anyhow, the preacher quoted Elizabeth as telling Mary, “Ohhh Mary, they gonna talk about you, ‘cause your baby ain’t gonna look nothin’ like his daddy!”

I always get a kick out of some people’s thinking. “Stars don’t act like that”. Comets, supernova, etc. might have been perceived as a star - or there is the possible “God put a light up there somehow” (I’m thinking of the Jews following the column of fire by night and smoke by day thing in the wilderness).

And I think it is fairly well known that Jesus wasn’t born on December 25th. Watching their sheep in the field was a clue as I recall that it may have been Spring. Regardless - he is almost saying that “well, it wasn’t the 25th - so it might not have been ever.

And why does he keep saying the THREE wisemen - the Bible never says that! (They brought Gold, Frankenscense and Myrh - so that is where we get the image of three guys!) The “Kings” is also a misnomer.
