Happy 9th Clinton Impeachment Day!

Remember, Impeachment is Forever!

December 19, 1998 - December 19, 2007

Bill & Monica - an embarassment to the USA

Some background to refresh your memory as you
pause to celebrate Clinton Impeachment Day ...

The charges arose from an investigation by Independent
Counsel Kenneth Starr. Originally dealing with the failed
land deal years earlier known as Whitewater, Starr, with
the approval of Attorney General Janet Reno, expanded
his investigation into Clinton's conduct during the sexual
harassment lawsuit filed by a former Arkansas government
employee, Paula Jones.

In a sworn deposition (meaning, UNDER OATH) for this case,
Clinton denied having  a "sexual affair" with White House
intern Monica Lewinsky.

Linda Tripp, one of Lewinsky's confidantes, provided Starr
with taped phone conversations in which Lewinsky discussed
having a physical relationship with Clinton. Based on these
tapes, Starr concluded that Clinton had committed perjury.

(President Clinton's attorney's had reportedly counseled him
to settle the lawsuit years earlier. Hillary would not allow any
settlement. Pride comes before a fall.)

After rumors of the scandal reached the news, Clinton publicly
stated (lied), "I did not have sexual relations with that woman,
Miss Lewinsky." In his Paula Jones deposition, he swore,
"I have never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky.
I've never had an affair with her." Months later, Clinton
admitted that his relationship with Lewinsky was "wrong"
and "not appropriate." He lied to the public and lied under
oath.

The Impeachment Proceeding in the
House of Representatives

Upon the passage of H. Res. 611, Clinton was impeached
on December 19, 1998, by the House of Representatives
on grounds of perjury to a grand jury (by a 228-206 vote)
and obstruction of justice (by a 221-212 vote).

Two other articles of impeachment failed — a second
count of perjury in the Jones case (by a 205-229 vote)
and one accusing Clinton of abuse of power
(by a 148-285 vote). Four Republicans
opposed all four articles, while five Democrats voted
for at least one of them. Upon passage of H. Res. 611,
Clinton became the first elected U.S. president
and the second U.S. president to be impeached,
following Andrew Johnson in 1868.

Contempt of Court Citation & Loss of Law License

In April 1999, about two months after being acquitted by the
Senate, Clinton was cited by Federal District Judge Susan
Webber Wright for civil contempt of court for his "willful failure"
to obey her repeated orders to testify truthfully in the Paula
Jones sexual harassment lawsuit. For this citation, Clinton
was assessed a $90,000 fine, and the matter was referred
to the Arkansas Supreme Court to see if disciplinary action
would be appropriate.

In Short, He Lied

Regarding Clinton's January 17, 1998, deposition where he
was placed under oath, the judge wrote:

"Simply put, the president's deposition testimony
regarding whether he had ever been alone with Ms.
(Monica) Lewinsky was intentionally false, and his
statements regarding whether he had ever engaged in
sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky likewise were
intentionally false . . . ."

In January 2001, on the day before leaving office, Clinton
agreed to a five-year suspension of his Arkansas law
license as part of an agreement with the independent
counsel to end the investigation. Based on this suspension,
Clinton was automatically suspended from the United
States Supreme Court bar, from which he then chose
to resign.

WHO got to write the bio on the White House website????

In 1998, as a result of issues surrounding personal indiscretions with a young woman White House intern, Clinton was the second U.S. president to be impeached by the House of Representatives. He was tried in the Senate and found not guilty of the charges brought against him. He apologized to the nation for his actions and continued to have unprecedented popular approval ratings for his job as president.

All about sex, I see

I'm with you 100% - I ALWAYS celebrate, because even though the Senate didn't have the ball$ to remove the treasonous rapist, no matter what he does to try to gloss over his image, he will ALWAYS have that as his legacy.

“12-19 is my Mother’s birthday.”

Happy birthday to her. Let her know what a gift
she was given by the House! Impeachment is forever.

I had a copy of the front page of the Seattle Times that showed a picture of the bent one with the huge title “IMPEACHED” framed and hanging in my study for years after that... maybe I should pull it out... er, get it out and rehang it in remembrance!

I didn't see the wolfman cry.

My second memory was when Shhets Byrd said and I think this is word for word "These (charges) may rise to high crimes and misdemeanors, but I'll not vote to remove (Clinton from office."

Kudos to the Republic of Abkhaziya if those stamps are genuine. (This doesn’t mean I support their independence from Georgia—I don’t know enough about that struggle to know which side to favor.)

To my knowledge there is no way to remove or rescind an impeachment vote. Lets just say it’s part of Clinton’s permanent record as president. Ain’t as pretty as a diamond, but it’s still forever.
