Since its debut little over a year ago, the Wii has been a startling success for Nintendo. The company managed to shift an astounding 981,000 units in November alone. However, Wii sales have been constrained by supply. While Nintendo having trouble meeting demand for the Wii is nothing new, it looks like those supply problems could cost the console maker some serious money.
James Lin, a senior analyst at MDB Capital Group, believes that Nintendo could be selling twice the 1.8 million Wii consoles it is manufacturing a month and that the company is set to miss out on an estimated $1.3 billion in sales this Christmas not to mention losses in revenue from missed software sales. Meanwhile, the PS3 continues to slowly eat into the Wiis market share, especially in Japan.
The Wii is a license to print money for Nintendo, but they can’t get any more production going - they can’t find anyone else to make it with the quality they demand.
The PS3’s sudden surge is just that, a surge. It will be dropping back down a bit after Christmas.
Shortages last year to create a buzz was probably a good marketing tool. Shortages this year are just foolish. It’s easier to find a Gamecube than a Wii.
The Wii is simply a completely different experience from most video game consoles. It has generated interest and sales from customers who never even wanted a video game before.
Nintendo knocked this one out of the park.
My son has one and he lost interest in it. It needs an NCAA football game or a good action game.
I agree. My wife and I bought one two weeks ago. We don’t have any kids and the last TV video console I owned was a Sega about 12 years ago.
Wii is a wonderful console and has the capacity to be much more than just a game system.
I’ll buy it for $200.
I “overpaid” for one as well and am quite happy with it. I am a pc gamer with an outrageous gaming rig I built for myself. I bought the Wii because it offers something you can’t get anywhere else. It’s also fun!
Wii is nintendo’s answer to all the complaining people do about kids not getting up and being active.
now they can do both.
Have you looked at the on-line store?
Mostly because not everyone enjoys freezing their nards off in the rain while fishing.
Also, I can be a rock star playing GH3, but I can’t in the real world.
Resident Evil 4 is a dynamite action game for the Wii. He should check it out.
We actually had good fortune this weekend - we decided that a Wii would be an outstanding gift from Grandpa (he gives us cash to get his gifts for our kids) but didn’t think we could find one.
Fri night, a very nice associate at Target said to us “If you watch for when stores feature the Wii in their upcoming flyer and show up first thing Sunday morning, you stand a decent chance of getting one.”
I said, “Can you tell me if Target’s flyer is featuring it next week?”
He gave me a look and said again, “If you watch for when the stores are featuring it in their flyer...”
I said, “Thank you very much!” :)
My husband showed up at Target yesterday morning 45 min before they opened and got in line behind 53 people. He said, “I’ve become what I’ve made fun of” - standing in line for a toy! But it paid off - he was number 54 out of 72 (they passed out tickets - did it in very orderly fashion - no cabbage patch stampedes there) and they were gone in an hour. Still can’t believe we got one. Grandpa is going to ride this wave til next year. I can’t wait to hear the screams when he gives it to them on Saturday.
Like I said, I just don’t understand it.
BTW: Can you play guitar in real life?
We kept on the phone to stores and got it for list in October. Hidden at Granny’s house so our son doesn’t stumble on it.
