The October 2007 Vanity Fair had a long, gaseous article explaining how the pro-Bush bias of the mainstream media cost Al Gore the 2000 presidential election. (For you kids out there too young to remember, Al Gore is a vaguely gay, morbidly obese former Clinton administration official who raised campaign cash from Buddhist monks and claimed he invented the Internet.)
Meanwhile, Republicans can barely remember that just a few years ago, former Clinton crony and current Hillary adviser Sandy Berger stuffed top-secret national security documents in his pants, snuck them out of the National Archives and destroyed them.
But liberals are still fighting the 2000 presidential election -- if only to take a break from fighting the 1973 Chilean coup by Augusto Pinochet. They never rest, they never give up, they never stop lying. Liberals lie and lie and lie and then, the moment conservatives respond, they shout: OLD NEWS!
By my rough estimate, there have been one zillion books, movies, plays, allegories, interpretive dances and limericks about the Dark Night of Fascism Under Joe McCarthy (DNFUJM).
The anti-McCarthy oeuvre has zippy titles, such as "The Nightmare Decade: The Life and Times of Senator Joe McCarthy," "Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism: The Hate That Haunts America" and "How I, Al Gore, Stopped Joe McCarthy's Hate Campaign" -- although that last one may have been made up during the 2000 campaign by a hostile media.
Fifty years later, the only true history book ever written about McCarthy has finally been released: M. Stanton Evans' "Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies." Liberals have responded with vicious attacks and - naturally -- claims the book merely recites "old news."
So I think I'm entitled to at least a few columns on the book that finally tells the truth about the DNFUJM.
The line is a clear set-up and bait. Any leftist who rises to it and explodes over it, as they are meant to, will then get chapter and verse on all the worse smears leveled at McCarthy, and will be told it is sauce for the gander.
Hmm, do you - unpublished (aside from frequent posts on FR), unlistened to, unaccomplished in the field of elections or policy, get to dismiss the National Review, the undoubtable founding of the conservative movement for 60 years in America, as not being conservative? Maybe you need to sit down and leanr your place.
NR's endorsement of Willard was well reasoned and based on conservative principles of life, capitalism, anti-illegal immigration, and a strong international policy against terror. You might disagree with their conclusions, but dismissing them as irrelevant because they aren't 'conservative'? You are pathetic.
I have my disagreements with NR going all the way back to Wittaker Chamber's smear job review of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged (far, far worse than the Raddosh review). They do slip up from time to time, but they are, more than any other journal, the benchmark of American Conservatism.
Ann's just a bit too harsh for you eh? Thin skinned or are you in the "she-makes-conservatives-look-bad" camp?
Thanks for posting my favorite Ann Coulter picture.
I really appreciate this post, some of US are clueless about Birchers, the most I know of them is what I heard Rush say one time back in late 80's or early 90's.
I love Ann, her style and her wit in describing with words a mural of what is liberalism.
Posted the column last night but didn’t get to read it this morning. The opening paragraphs are one of the best summations of liberals’ obsession with fighting past battles again in the present day I’ve ever read.
Sigh.... Beauty and Brains. Too bad I won’t be able to see her at CPAC 2008....
On page 330 of M. Stanton Evans' "Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies." there appears the following statement of the author "...the Remington case made it clear that the alleged security crackdown under Truman was a myth. And if the Truman screeners could let the sharks slip through the netting, how likely were they to catch the minnows?" to which I added the following margin note "And how likely is it that the "minnows" would forever remain "minnows"?"
Some of you will know that I have been a student of this period of history for some time and have read extensively on the subject of Mr. McCarthy. My question to you gentlemen is this:
How many do you suppose there are who fully grasp the significance of what Ann Coulter in Treason and Mr. Evans in "Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies."
Could it be that we would not have a communist China, and thus not had to fight the wars in Korea or Viet Nam. Could it be that we would would not have today a communist Cuba and thus not have had to deal with all that we have had to deal with as a result if we had actually had "someone at the state department actually representing the American interest?
Could it be that at leat some of these "minnows" who slipped through the net grew up to be full grown sharks themselves? How likely do you suppose it that they or their proteges might STILL be in place today?
Thanks for posting such an excellent summation of the history of the Republican Establishment v. McCarthy and the Birchers.
Hell, they're in Congress now. They're called "the majority party."
Unfortunately for that sensible sounding desire, the modern left is in fact hip deep in outright treason, and refusal to call them on it has wrecked US foreign policy. Ann sees that. Evans knows it, though he is limiting himself to telling the truth about the past, rather than advocating something now.
An EXCELLENT summation! Now what do we do about the modern day subversives who are dealing us misery THIS VERY MINUTE!
I agree and would posit that THIS is the single greatest problem we face not discounting the terror threat.
Should read:
How many do you suppose there are who fully grasp the significance of what Ann Coulter in Treason and Mr. Evans in "Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies." have exposed.
That is a problem to be sure but not nearly so grave a problem as that posed by careerist of this ilk at the Department of State, the CIA, NSA, and others.
Did she just call Al Gore a faggot?
“They do slip up from time to time, but they are, more than any other journal, the benchmark of American Conservatism.”
Actually they are the benchmark of Rockefeller (country club) Republicans, you know, the ones that have given the republican party the reputation that they are the party of the rich.
Further, wouldn't a Rockafeller Republican favor giving drivers licenses to illegals rather than vetoing them?
