Preliminary results from the JanuaryJune 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) indicate that more than one out of every eight American homes (13.6%) had only wireless telephones during the first half of 2007.

We switched to a VOIP “land-line” and it definitely saves us over a traditional land-line... And it’s still completely compatible with fax. :)
Comcast in our area hasn’t been bad. Not problem-free by any means, but not bad. So I see no reason to shop for TV signal service at this time. Maybe someday that’ll come; but not now.
Are you trying to say that a phone isn’t necessary? In many places, you can have a cell phone for cheaper than a landline... Poor people still need to be able to call 911 if they have a heart attack. Poor people still need a phone to get calls for interviews for jobs.
We have Verizon FIOS...screaming fast...so far, very reliable. Very lousy for TV, though...still using DISH.

911 can track cell phones. Just have to turn that feature on.
We use cell phones, got rid of land line about 4 years ago.
Taking a class from home today, using Skype to call into the toll-free number. took me about 10 minutes to set-up and get going. No charge...nice...
I refuse to use my phone service’s long distance - I use GTC at 3.8 cents per minute. If you pay via credit card, there’s no minimum monthly fee. They use to be my internet service when I was on dialup but now that I have DSL, I still use their long distance service.
FIOS isn’t available here. Verizon is my cell provider (and former landline provider), but I guess I’m too boonyfied for FIOS.
Wiis are currently more expensive than PS3s.
I have Verizon for Internet (Fios), TV (Fios), landline and wireless. I would ditch the landline if only I had a good signal in the house — until then, I have to keep the landline.
There was a proposal to build a tower for T-Mobile (with hopes that other carriers could piggyback) in my town, but it got squashed, I believe.
Hopefully you get Fios in your area soon, at least for Internet — blazingly fast speeds, if only hampered by a piece-o-poo router.
Did you lose the bundled-service discount?
I subscribed to Earthlink cable Internet service (which cost the same as the Comcast "discount") and got my TV signal via DISH. The funny thing about it is that Comcast did the install, Comcast handed the billing, and Comcast serviced the account. Yet because I signed up through Earthlink I got it cheaper.
I did return to DSL though because the up speed of the cable service was too slow.
Router or modem? I currently have my two PC's both hard and wireless wired through a router. The router goes to Comcast's cable modem. And I really don't want to replace my fine Linksys router with another.
You must really dislike Slapshot to give him/her such advice. DSL is cheaper, faster and steadier than satellite. I don't know anyone on earth who would take satellite over DSL if given the choice. I speak from experience.
>>>If I had a suitable replacement to the DSL service I have, Id yank the entire land line out of my house. The cell phones work just fine.<<<
If your cell provider has EVDO technology, get an air card from them.
My system works very well, download speeds similar to cable. I don’t upload big files. Yes, there is a 2-3 second lag for the signal to travel to and from the satellite. And upload is not much faster then dial up. You get used to it. My experience with DSL was not good. To each their own. The technology is different and relatively new. For some, satellite is a viable option. There is even airband now...
That may be so, but if power goes out in your area, you have no comms. At least the POTS lines supply their own power.
Other than that, it's great. It's better than dialup, but way way worse than DSL, which is second. Cable is best, of course, at least until we get FiOS.
True, but that’s why we have cell phones as well. If the power is out, faxing is the least of my worries.
