I was looking at a Hillary thread today, which said that if she won the nomination, a lot of Democrats would abandon the Democrat Party. It reminded me of when I finally left the Democrats and "turned to the Dark Side", as my family says. It struck me that FReepers must have a lot of interesting stories about how they came to be here, and that these stories should be told.
Please post your testimony below. I'll start...
Ah, bless you, my friend, you have done my heart good. In our day, it was Francione, Anna May Sheppard and Arthur Kinoy, among others. I just did a quick Wiki on Kinoy and found he represented Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and was partners with Kunstler. Figures!
my wife is just my wife and mother to our kids....a local gal
she’s good at it
I am now retired after having spent the first 20 years of my carrier working in the private sector chasing oil, gas, and petrochemicals all around the world and the last 22.5 years in academia. You cannot imagine how much fun I had playing with those pointy heads who knew nothing other than what some professor had told them or what they had read in a textbook.
I... can’t put my finger on any one moment. Probably started when I noticed that FICA guy taking so much of my money from my meager paychecks in high school. If I ever get a hold of him... :)
And I don’t identify as Republican (even though that is how I’m registered and that is how I vote) so much as I identify as a Conservative.
I am a conservative. The GOP does not, IMO, hold exclusively conservative values. I try hard to be consistently conservative, even when it means that it runs contrary to the GOP. As an individual, I can be consistent and I don’t have to pander to various factions.
I began to identify as a conservative when Bill Clinton ran for president and I simply could not in good conscience vote for him.
Born Republican as well, raised two republicans and have a 10 year old grandson who said his mom (not my child) told him Hillary will save the world.
I’m raising two also!
My Dad gave me advise when I was growing up...always vote the party [of course, he was speaking of the donkey party]...I took that advise and WILL NEVER vote for a man or women but the party. That's how folks got sucked into voting for that little weasel Perot...if folks would have stuck with voting the party...we'd never had the criminal clintoons in office. Besides, Perot had a money deal with those dirty criminals the clintoons'.
I became politically aware, and conservative too, during the unilateral nuclear disarmament ho-ha of the early 80’s.
I was on the other side of that one. I actually trusted the Soviets! Man, I was such an idiot!!!
Ping to a great thread!
I wrote a piece on this once, but I turned on the television while I was working security at the Texas Department of Transportation. This was a swing shift.
I had migrated up to the third floor in sheer boredom. I believe it was a Friday night. I turned on the television and there was Rush Limbaugh. It was the specific show where Rush was talking about the Clinton dog, and then suddenly, the engineer placed Chelsea Clinton’s picture on the screen.
Rush laughed as the audience laughed. It was that comedic moment that kept me tuned into the show instead of turning the channel. As I listened, his points began to make sense. Later, I found his radio program, and in the months that followed, I began to transition to conservatism.
So, I guess I’d have to say that if Rush had not been on television, it might’ve been longer before my evolution to conservatism. There is no dollar amount that I can equivocate in escaping the jaws of liberalism.
So, as always, thank you, sir. I appreciate it more than you know.

About 1986. I voted for Reagan in ‘84. It just took me a couple of years to change my registration.
I’ve never been a Republican, but I’ve always managed to vote against democrats. I’m probably more libertarian than anything, but don’t see eye to eye with them on some things.
When did YOU become a Republican?
When I got my first paycheck!!!!!
With Ronald Reagan, not that I was really anything else other than maybe a borderline anarchist.
I grew up in a household that always voted Democrat..There was not a viable Republican party in Texas then..I voted for Ike for his second term and had many discussions with my parents about joining me..My Mother voted for Reagan when she was 80..Patience paid off..LOL..
I have never voted third party...always Republican.
Good post. I was a conservative since Johnson was president. [I was in high school then]. I was always a conservative, but the garbage that came from Johnson and his great society idea...I saw the handwriting on the wall at that tender age....socialism pure and simple. I love my country and it sickens me to see the downward spiral over the last 40 years.
9 months before I was born.
I became a CONSERVATIVE in 1978-1980.
The days of Jimmy Carter.
21% PRIME interest rate
14-15% Unemployment
> 10 % Inflation
And the “Gas Shortage”. Jimmy sat in the white house in the middle of the summer (with a big fire roaring in the background) and told us there WAS NO MORE OIL - not peak oil, not gonna run out soon, but the “there is no more” sort of talk to run up the price.
I voted for Ronald Regan and wish we had more like him
Duncan Hunter is as close as we can get.
The rest of the republican field are midgets.
