I was looking at a Hillary thread today, which said that if she won the nomination, a lot of Democrats would abandon the Democrat Party. It reminded me of when I finally left the Democrats and "turned to the Dark Side", as my family says. It struck me that FReepers must have a lot of interesting stories about how they came to be here, and that these stories should be told.
Please post your testimony below. I'll start...
I am British, but I can say that without any doubt whatsoever I became a Republican on September 11th 2001 - a day that changed my life, and my life direction forever.
While I will never be able to vote republican - I can tell you I stand 100% behind the party and your president.
I am so greatful the world has you, and in admiration at the strength of will that the party has.
Had the party been called the federalist, free soil, or Anti-Jackson party AND had a chance of wining we would have been one. My family is part Cherokee and we could not forgive Andy Jackson for the trail of tears.
As to “Radical Republicans”. Legend has it we voted for Lincoln AND secession.
1952...maybe before that; but I don’t remember.
A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.
Thomas Paine
Not to get into advocating for one candidate or another, here, but I have noticed that Fred Thompson really does endeavor to be clear and precise in his language. He is an intelligent writer who writes for precision, not obfuscation.
I don’t disagree with you about RINOs. I just think NOW is the time to get rid of them. Next Nov, we need to get rid of dims.
Those are very gratifying words to hear coming from a European,UKRepublican.I can't for the life of me understand how so much animosity has developed between the US and Western and Central Europe. It may well be that you have a better understanding of the reasons than do I.
Well put.
The republican party has been high jacked by corporate globalist and lobbyist.
The Dems are just plain socialist.
Ditto - born and raised this way...
Our politicians are cowards, and our media is even more liberal than your own.
I believe those two reasons perfectly explain why this gulf has developed.
From their discussions with my parents, it was easy for me to distinguish the "government needs to support us" position of my Aunt & Uncle, from "no one's the boss of me" position of my parents.
I always remember feeling proud of my parents for the points they made. I knew that their success came from better choices, and their defense of their political positions came from that basic philosophy. They firmly believed you got where you ended up, by working hard and making good choices. And here's the kicker that really made an impression on me... My parents believed that you NEVER look at someone else's success and feel jealous; rather, you look at someone else's success with a "good for them--how'd they do it--can I learn something so that I can make a better choice in my life to equal their success" feeling. This approach on life is a much more empowering feeling than an "oh, woe is me" reaction....AND, a Republican was made.
Your father made an OUTSTANDING assessment. I’m using this in future discussions. I’d like to also make your father proud—as I’m sure he is/was of you!
I just think it’s fallacy when folks here...not you particularly treat the moden parites as a constant since their inception.
Jefferson-Dems
Hamilton-Repubs
it’s a much more twisted tale
my wife...on my homepage.. is substantially Cherokee-Creek as are many native old family Tennessee valley peoples
your kin must have realized they were not happy with their Lincoln vote...
I know the exact moment — when the remains of our servicemen were publicly desecrated after the Ayatollah Carter’s half-assed “rescue” attempt. It wasn’t until Reagan took office that I felt good about being an American again.
You’re probably familiar with various accounts of how conservative student newspapers are stolen and destroyed on college campuses. Well, that’s exactly what happened with our little newsletter “The Federalist”. But it gets better. One time when we were just starting out, we stuffed the newsletter into the student mailboxes which were simply open pigeon-hole style boxes, with nametags right off the student lounge. Many student organizations put their flyers out the same way. That day, the Dean of Students went around personally and removed them all, mumbling something about violating some arcane rule no one knows about.
Liberalism: The religion of tolerance, just like Islam, the religion of peace.
Pre Jackson, there is no political family history.
Q?: What/Who is your wife off your home page?
Yes. If your ancestors have been in this country more than 3 or 4 generations you are part something, I am not sure what. Whatever it is, is not what is where you were from.
To be sure, Rutgers was not particularly interested in a wide ranging debate from various points of view.
