Michigan House Passes Ban On Smoking In Bars, Restaurants

Smoking in Michigan workplaces, including bars and restaurants, would be banned under legislation passed by the Democratic-led state House.
The vote is a victory for supporters, who have been pushing the measure for a decade.
But it may not get very far in the Senate because majority Republicans oppose it.
Backers say a majority of state residents want a broad workplace smoking ban, and point to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke on employees and patrons.
Opponents say smoking is legal and government shouldn't interfere with the rights of private property owners.
Casinos, horse tracks, bingo halls, cigar bars and smoke shops would be exempt from the smoking ban.
Was in Michigan this summer (visiting from New York).
My wife was astounded that they would offer us ashtrays in a bar.
Nanny State Ping..........
Another good example of how the Democrats know what’s best for you. Too bad your too dumb to realize it.
Sounds like my trip to Texas 20+ years ago. I was shocked to see ashtrays in the aisles of the grocery stores.
No, this is going to be a great blessing for the Bars. Since the Smoking Ban in New York, I’ve been able to stay out longer and not feel as bad the next day. So instead of just going out on a Thursday or Friday, I’d be able to go out for an after work drink or two on Monday/Tuesday or Wednesday.
Compassionate Socialists? /sarcasm
MI ping..
so, any word on how many budget bills are still floating around?
Tell that to my friends in Delaware who lost their jobs after the smoking ban, or the ones that owned bars.......oh wait, a lot of those bars no longer exist.
Are there no bars left in Delaware? Of Course not, there are plenty.
Your friends were bad businessmen and just want to put the blame on somebody else.
Didn’t seem to affect bars in Ohio. If someone wants a beer with friends they will still go to bars. And restaurants still have long waits.
I’ve yet to see a single bar that considers this a blessing, except for the bars that border municipalities that ban smoking.
They did that in a small town near me, and the town immediately experienced significant loss of business. Meanwhile, the bars right next door, but not in the township, began seeing huge increases in business.
Nanny stateism, at its worst.
Nice try, but no cigar.
Believe what you wish, including the propaganda by the busybodies, I know better.
That's not what people in Ohio are telling me, including non-smokers.
I’m sorry, I haven’t seen it.
My cousin owns a bar in philly and he’s seen no drop-off. The Bars I go to in NYC are all still going strong as if the ban has never happened.
Poorly run bars go out of business all the time, since America has lost the will to accept blame for one’s mistakes, they find a way to blame the government.
Maybe they can get al sharpton on the bandwagon.
If so, then why don’t the bars just ban it on their own?
My brother ones a great bar/dinner in Florida when a no smoking ban took place. He hated the idea, said he’d lose business and go under. However, he’s still there, didn’t go under and his business actually increased. So I suppose the fact of the matter is, people don’t like to smell cigerette smoke.
We noticed that the restaurants are fuller now for breakfast. There used to be a line waiting for the non-smoking section and empty seats in the smoking section - now it is all full.
It's really too bad we can't tell the government how to operate.
