If the Republican Party really wanted to hold on to the White House in 2009, it's pretty clear what it would do. It would grit its teeth, swallow its doubts and nominate a ticket of John McCain for president and Mike Huckabee for vice president and president-in-waiting.
Those two are far from front-runners. They trail Mitt Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire and lag behind Rudy Giuliani in national surveys of Republican voters. But, in a series of debates, including last week's CNN/YouTube extravaganza. McCain and Huckabee have been notable for their clarity, character and, yes, simple humanity.
From everything I have heard on the campaign trail, it's obvious that they are the pair who have earned the widest respect among the eight Republican candidates themselves. McCain is the eldest and the most honored, not only for what he endured as a Vietnam prisoner of war but as a principled battler for what he considers essential on Iraq and other national-security issues.
Huckabee, who previously was known only to those of us who cover state government and governors, has been the surprise discovery of the campaign season. His combination of religious principle, good humor, tolerance and his clear passion on education and health care complements McCain's muscular foreign policy and aversion to wasteful domestic spending.
The two of them seem often to be operating on a different and higher plane than the quarrelsome Giuliani and Romney, whose mutual contempt is as palpable as it is persuasive.
Fred Thompson appears perpetually grumpy a presence hard to imagine inhabiting the Oval Office.(continued)

Take note that in an earlier “debate.”
(The one’s that MSNBC and CNN do seem more like inquisitions.)
Huckabee praised McCain.
I remember hearing it.
So does old liberal Broder know something we don’t.
Another reason to view Huckabee with suspicion and skepticism.
The LAST person the Republican party should be looking to for advice is Broder. He hasn’t been right on anything for decades.
And, where is that statement wrong?
OBTW, welcome to Free Republic!
Hmmmm...Broder was Fred’s cheerleader-in-chief for the beltway crowd last month. Wonder what happened to push him on to McCain and Huckabee’s tiny bandwagon?
Broder is an old geek, DC Elite/pseudo Conserv a lot like Geo. Will and others...they really do not have the pulse of the Conservative movement in this country and thus should not be taken sriously....they know this and will show their true colors in this election! McCain & Huck would be the plutonium pill for the R’s!
Brilliant!
That why he thinks McCain would be the best choice since it would keep their nice little DC bubble world clicking along. Everyone else, even the Clintons are newbies who might upset Border's comfortable little elitist world.

Over the years, yes---and based on all of that reading, Broder is just another socialist commentator. As to your "one-liner" quote from him, I can only say "broken clock".
Another liberal giving us advice!
Thanks for the advice Mr Broder, and will do,
exactly the opposite. Thompson-Hunter ticket.
And my dream democrat ticket is Kucinich/McKinney.
Can we do that, David Broder, Mr. grand poobah, genius scribbler, twit extraordaniere and dean of Washington columnists?
Liberals love to tell us who we should pick.
Thompson’s immigration plan must have been the last straw for Broder.
So, Huckabee is praised by Broder for being more liberal than the other candidates? Are the beltway types like Broder really so utterly out of touch that they think that their calling attention to and praising of supposedly conservative candidates liberal stances on so many issues is somehow going to help those supposed conservatives get elected? And as for Huckabee being a "surprise discovery", who is surprised that the Leftist MSM is actively promoting a candidate who espouses Leftist orthodoxy under the guise of religious beliefs? Sheeesh.
This is the first election where I think a very large number of people - Mostly because of the blogosphere - Are keenly aware of the inner workings of the political/media establishment, and that means the MSM no longer has a free hand to manipulate, manicure, obfuscate and lie without being called on it by someone. There is no longer any presumption of respectability or honesty on the part of these so-called "journalists" by a huge number of people, and those activists-come-journalists simply haven't figured out a way to regain their utterly undeserved positions of privilege. Nor should they. Irrelevance and oblivion are downright tasty.
bump!
A Ron Paul-Kucinich ticket would be a Freak Brothers comic book update. Kucinich’s wife can star as Little Annie Amphetamine. That was a dirty comic book:)
Broder is a consistent Leftist , and it makes one curious as to why you would say he isn’t ...
You are exactly right .
