Giuliani foes in GOP panicky
The Washington Times ^ | 1 Dec 07 | By Stephen Dinan and By Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 12/01/2007 5:01:26 PM PST by Jay777

Rudy Panic set in for many Republicans this week, with conservative leaders both nationally and in Iowa concluding they need to settle on a single champion to prevent Rudolph W. Giuliani from winning the GOP presidential nomination.

They fear that victory by the socially liberal former New York mayor could permanently shatter the largely successful coalition of social, religious, economic and national defense conservatives that, more often than not, has worked electoral magic for Republican candidates at all levels.

"The main driving force behind all of that is a belief that Rudy Giuliani is positioned to win the nomination and a belief that, and I describe it this way, the four most central planks in our Republican platform would be sacrificed in the process: life, marriage, guns, border security," said Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican. He said the calls and e-mails in Iowa grew "utterly intense in the last week" as Republicans urged one another to settle on an anti-Rudy candidate.

A new poll showing a statistical tie between Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee for the Jan. 3 Iowa first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses is fueling the frenzy.

"What conservatives have to realize is that Giuliani is now relying on Mike Huckabee to take his most viable opponent, Mitt Romney, down in Iowa, and that anyone voting for him there in the caucuses will be inadvertently, and ironically, helping the New Yorker," David A. Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, said earlier this week in a surprise endorsement of Mr. Romney.

It IS an endorsement of Romney, practically. Hardly another candidate is focused upon.

I was disappointed in the Times for this article.

“Rudy has three Achilles’ heels (a pretty good trick for a biped)—abortion, immigration, and his personal life. But he did clean up New York, and sometimes gives terrific speeches.”

Lol, more like five Achilles’ heels. I’d add gun control and gay rights. Many will not believe any backtracking from Rudy of those issues. He has a record on both.

We have heard a lot about what the anti-Rudy forces are going to do if he is nominated - that they will destroy the party in their anger and frustration.

Most of the RINOs - I mean Rudy supporters - have said on this forum that they will vote for whoever the nominee is - that anyone "would be better than Hillary".

What GOP candidate would they consider "unacceptable" and why?

What did Rush say that sounded like a Thompson endorsement?

What are the anti-Rudy forces offering the very large pro-Rudy minority to keep them on board? So far, all I see on offer are threats and abuse. That being the case, the destruction of the party appears assured, whatever happens.

What is Rudy doing to keep the pro life and anti amnesty people on board?

A: Zip!

Thanks for the destruction of the party Rudy. And he's arrogant enough not to see it coming.

Fred had the south until Huckabee shot up in the polls taking away the hard core social conservative vote. Now the south may be split enough for Rudy to win. Unless the conservatives unite behind one candidate, Rudy will be tough to stop.

Huckabee is the DBM's useful idiot.

but is any of them electable?

The latest poll has McCain trailing Hillary just outside the margin of error in Massachusetts (50-45), while other candidates lag behind badly (next is Giuliani by 14 and it gets worse from there). And in five polls now Obama has never led McCain in Massachusetts. Obama leads everyone else there. Amazing but true.

Diagnosis: McCain is the most electable. But are conservatives willing to give him a chance? I hope so because frankly I don't see anyone beating Hillary but him. McCain may be a far from ideal conservative, but he's firmly right of Rudy, and is pro-life, pro-surge, and well-credentialed.

Truly amazing. It's now December and the primaries begin next month and it took this long for Rush to finally say the above.

This is a man who has accurately deduced the political dynamic. You have to deal with one threat at a time. Hillary is dealt with only after Guilliani.

Huckabee’s support needs to NOT come from Romney. Guilliani will sit back and take the nomination on the backs of delegates from NY and Calif and FL. Get that well understood. Guilliani does NOT need the south to win the nomination.

And no, it’s not the RNC orchestrating it. It is the voters. If the voters want Huckabee to progress, it needs to NOT be voters from Romney fueling the advance. This is the brilliant tactical understanding Keane is laying on the table. Guilliani must be stopped. Period. Huckabee doesn’t have the money or organization to win the northern delegates necessary to do it. Romney does.

Friday Rush Limbaugh spoke for the conservative movement when he revealed his support for Fred Thompson.

There are many of us Freepers that have been Fredheads from the time he was mentioned as a potential candidate. Glad to see Rush came around to our side!

I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-gay rights, Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. “No, I have not supported that, and I don’t see my position on that changing,” he responded. Source: CNN.com, “Inside Politics” Dec 2, 1999 http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Rudy_Giuliani_Abortion.htm

ANDERSON COOPER 360 DEGREES (November 14, 2006)

RUDY GIULIANI (R), FORMER MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY: I'm pro- choice. I'm pro-gay rights.

KING: Giuliani supports a woman's right to an abortion, and back in 1999, he opposed a federal ban on late-term abortions.

GIULIANI: No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing.

KING: Immigration could be another presidential landmine. Back in 1996, Mayor Giuliani went to federal court to challenge new federal laws requiring the city to inform the federal government about illegal immigrants.

JEFFREY: He took the side of illegal immigrants in New York City against the Republican Congress.

KING: Giuliani opposes same-sex marriage but as mayor, he supported civil unions and extending health and other benefits to gay couples. He also supported the assault weapons ban and other gun control measures opposed by the National Rifle Association.

GIULIANI: I'm in favor of gun control. I'm pro-choice.

Republican Big-Wigs Support Pro-Abortion Event in NY

Pro-abortion Governor George Pataki and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also supports unrestricted abortion, are co-chairs of the 2000 Choice Award Presentation to be held on May 30 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. The event is sponsored by the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, a group that is campaigning for the removal of the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform.

While he was the “Republican Mayor” of New York City he appointed more than 60 men and women to the Civil, Criminal, and Family Court benchs. In all of those judicial appointment only two were Republican.

All of his other judical appointments were either registered Liberals or registered Democrats. As the “Republican Mayor” he had appointment power over more than 70 full commissioners in more than 50 City agencies, yet at no time during his administration did REPUBLICANS account for more than 10% of those appointments.

He even appointed Chuck Schumers wife as the City’s Department of Transportation Commissioner.

“And even as we grieve for those who lost their lives, and our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones, we may be able to find some sort of meaning in this tragedy by using it as a catalyst to revive national gun control efforts.”
Rudolph Giuliani

At the first Republican debate in May, Giuliani was alone among the GOP candidates in offering a less-than-robust affirmation when asked whether it would be a good day if the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling.

"It would be OK," Giuliani said. "It would be OK to repeal it."

But, he added: "It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent" and kept the law intact.

I think probably Rudy is running well because he is backed by a mixture of people.

Most important are the big money people, country club Republicans, and professional party operators. They like Rudy because he’s pro-abortion and anti-gun, and because he knows how to wheel and deal with donors and operators.

Next are the RINOs, who also support him because he’s pro-abortion, pro-gay, etc.

Next are war supporters, who have been deluded into thinking that Giuliani and McCain are the two toughest candidates in the war on terror. I think Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter would be at least as good. And McCain is too whacko to trust.

Next are Democrats and media operators, anxious to split the Republican party. They don’t really like Rudy, but they are helping him along because it’s to their advantage. Then they would turn against him after the nomination.

I think most of these people, other than Democrats, could support Thompson. But huge numbers of social conservatives couldl never vote for Rudy.
