Graveyard Shift Work Linked to Cancer
Associated Press (excerpt) ^ | November 29, 2007 | Maria Cheng

LONDON (AP) — Like UV rays and diesel exhaust fumes, working the graveyard shift will soon be listed as a "probable" cause of cancer.

It is a surprising step validating a concept once considered wacky. And it is based on research that finds higher rates of breast and prostate cancer among women and men whose work day starts after dark.

Next month, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, will add overnight shift work as a probable carcinogen.

The higher cancer rates don't prove working overnight can cause cancer. There may be other factors common among graveyard shift workers that raise their risk for cancer.

However, scientists suspect that overnight work is dangerous because it disrupts the circadian rhythm, the body's biological clock. The hormone melatonin, which can suppress tumor development, is normally produced at night.

...a "probable" cause of cancer.

Burnt toast...eggs...coffee...grilled chunk's-O-red meat...fish...

Yea.

I believe ya.

How much was your grant worth for this little, ahem, 'study'?

Hey, here is a nice hot cup of STFU!

Meanwhile, scientists are trying to come up with ways to reduce night workers' cancer risk. And some companies are experimenting with different lighting, seeking a type that doesn't affect melatonin production.

So far, the color that seems to have the least effect on melatonin is one that few people would enjoy working under: red.

It would also be the kind of light that would be easiest to fall asleep in while working.

If the light does not effect your melatonin it means it is not effecting your sleep cycle which means your body and mind want to sleep.

So you are not going to be alert, you are going to make mistakes and ultimately you could get injured.

You have to wonder how well controlled these studies are. It is safe to say that night workers have other risk factors: smoking, alcohol abuse, family issues.

I am calling this B.S.

Not everyone has a daytime clock.

I have been a night person all my life.

When I do have to flip over to a day schedule I get ill.

If we didn’t have night people who would bake, do emergency health care, fire fight and other jobs that require night shift.

My energy levels and over all well being are tops working at night.

It is a miracle I made it through school as I would often feel ill to the point of vomiting having to be in morning classes.

Be forced to be a day person literally makes me feel blue.

I know their are others like this to as there are societies and support groups for those who love the night work life.

Day people often accuse all nighters of some sort of deviant behavior or being lazy because we sleep at night.

Even my BG levels are flip from what a day persons are. (I am in remission two years now btw)

Night workers make less mistakes because we are focused due to less distractions from the day people and all the activity.

Ooops I meant to post because we sleep during the morning/day.

I have slept mornings as my nights 9ish to 1pm most of my adult life unless I have a daytime appt.
If I have to be up during those hours I try not to be driving as I can doze off very easily.

And I yawn and yawn and yawn...drives you day people nuts if I am in your office continually yawning.

I’m off by noon so I’m probably more prone to skin cancer from all the extra pool time.

I would think that a lack of Vitamin D figures in here somewhere.

Could this be related to a lack of natural sunlight? Natual sunlight and vitamin D go hand in hand. Could this be the reason?

Would you mind contacting my parents and explaining that to them, please?

For 46 years they’ve called me a “weirdo” or “vampire” because I feel like walking hell during the day.

I actually -ache- and feel so intellectually bankrupt I can barely function.

The closer it gets to dark, the less I hurt and the sharper my mind gets.

As soon as I got a job and a car, I left home and worked night shift jobs.
My productivity exceeded my co-workers to the point that I was often left standing with absolutely nothing to do because they couldn’t produce their parts fast enough for me to do the final finishing.

[once, I was almost fired because it *looked* like I’d only done half my quota when in reality, I’d cleared my quota twice that night and the next day’s remainder was the -third- round of parts. luckily, the guy in the station next to me piped up and bragged about that to the boss]

Now my “jobs” are art, graphics and websites and no one cares *when* I work at home, so long as it all gets done.

You can blab about your nighttime orientation but you wouldn’t be practicing it if it weren’t for modern electricity and the easy nighttime illumination it brings. Those bright light bulbs keep you awake and stimulated same as the hens they got laying eggs at night because electric lights are left on in the hen house

Excuse You.

We don’t work under lights.

Use very dim as since 9/11 the whole dang bay is now lit up and it lights up our home.

Your wrong.

Night life if we need light to read the smallest of things we use those wind up LED’s oh unless u consider that light.

The best light in the room is from this screen.

Unless I miss read your intentions. You missred us, you you can’t say it aloud here.
