BERKELEY, Calif. -- On Sunday evening a Memorial Oak Grove tree-sitter fell from the supply-line that is used to ferry food, water and people into and out of the tree-sit protest.
The traverse-line was created after the university erected a fence around the tree-sitters and spans from a tree inside the fenced in area to a tree outside the fence.
Nathaniel Hill, the fallen tree-sitter, was moving on the traverse line to meet his father, Carl Hill, who had come from the east coast to visit his son.
Hill was taken to Highland Hospital where he was treated for a broken arm above the wrist and a broken leg above the ankle.
"If the University had not put up the fence this wouldn't have happened," said Zachary Running Wolf, the organizer of the tree sit-in. "They created this situation where we have to move in and out of the grove on that traverse line."
University spokesman Dan Mogulof says the fall is not the university's fault.
"The accident is very regrettable but to state the obvious, completely avoidable," he said. "Things like this wouldn't happen if people who are illegally occupying university property were obeying the law."
Meanwhile, Judge Barbara Miller is set to render her decision any day on the legality of the university's expansion plans for the area.
The university also recently built a second fence surrounding the grove.
UC Police Chief Victoria Harrison said that the school built the new fence as a security measure prior to the forcible removal of the protesters from the trees.
Why can’t someone just cut the ropes they are using to get supplies up to the tree-sitters.
I’ve always heard that a cat will come out of the tree when it gets hungry enough. Aren’t hippies as smart as cats?

Spray the tree with grease. Then cut it down and to little pieces with the loudest chainsaw available.

I saw another version of this article that had the headline that the protester fell, breaking two limbs. The first comment expressed great relief that the limbs belonged to the protester, not a tree.

The University should be down there this morning cutting that transverse line.

This is one case where stupidity was painful. Too bad it's not always painful because then we could get on with serious matters.

Yup. It's been proven to be a liability, unsafe, and a health hazard. Leaving it in-place only invites more injuries; perhaps the next one fatal.
