Doesn’t the excessive usage diminish the life expectancy of these rechargeable batteries, thus incurring more cost?

How in the world is that going to work?

Wait until they have problems disposing of the lead and acid in the batteries. Something tells me the silver lining in the clouds with respect to electric cars is going to be a nightmare.

“The study estimates that a properly managed V2G car could net the owner close to $3,000 per year.”

LOL - and how much in gas will this car use to create that energy to sell back to the grid ?

or perhaps they are thinking the car will absorb electricity at night and sell it back to the grid during the day ... acting as a storage reserve ?

... That “logic” fails also as the grid would simply buy the battery themselves, lowering the excess capacity at night and evening out the power price - there are already ideas to buy back car batteries that have lost capacity to use in massive storage banks.

skeptics of electric cars might want to look at this
article about Mitsubishi’s electric car in EV World.
http://www.evworld.com/article.cfm?storyid=1352

with that said, V2G is stupid.
the more important thing is to
cut the middle east out of the deal.

Well, you can see how far our science education has sunk.

The perpetual motion guys are back.

What’s even sadder is that most of the clowns in Congress also believe this is possible.

IMHO.......Changes ain’t needed ........paperwork dam of laws is all that’s holding back centuries worth of oil in the CONUS or it’s territorial waters.

I drove the tires off a all electric version of the Pee on us (prius) a few weeks ago and it was nice, cheap and powerful and yes I’d like one..... as my choice . Not something forced upon me and mine by cow crap laws that line some polidiots pockets.

Our nation is in a economic death spiral due it’s loss of cheap energy !

Build the new Refineries and Nuclear power plants NOW !

Stay safe .....Hope yer well !

Let’s think about this.

Vehicle to Grid (gasoline powered generator running at night)
Gasoline — $27 per million Btu.
I supply the capital to provide the “power plant” (i.e., the car)
Thermal efficiency — 40%?
Maintenance — $75 - 100/hour at your car dealer

Natural Gas Fired Combined Cycle Central Plant
Natural Gas — $8 per million Btu.
The utility supplies the capital to provide the power plant
Thermal efficiency — 60%
Maintenance — Supplied by utility company. $50/h?

Looks DOA to me.

Can’t imagine the powerplant in a passenger car can even approach the efficiency of a utility company’s large scale dedicated power producing facility. Add in transmission loss and the car may as well just keep it’s energy for future road use.

This one seems suitable for the renewable energy ping list.

“In the most profitable scenario, the owner charges the vehicle while rates are low and provides services to the grid operators as requested. The study estimates that a properly managed V2G car could net the owner close to $3,000 per year.”

Sure, and if you believe this we’ll throw in a bridge in Brooklyn !....and the govMINT might even refund your taxes back to you..The day any utility company hands you a check for $3000 or even $300, better check and see if the flag flying over the WH is red, white and blue, or all red !

If they can produce electricity cheap enough to sell for profit, forget the rest of the car just get the engine and generator.

Yet another numnuts idea from someone so stupid they are incapable of taking courses in mathematics, mechanical or electrical engineering.

First of all, the grid is not “like a big battery”; what electro magnetic energy is being produced must match that which is being consumed - instantaneously.

Second, only a few really smart people out there have figured out that unreliable energy sources, wind, solar, automobile (I almost fell off my chair with that one) have to be matched with equivalent idle capacity in case someone’s car runs out of juice (or the wind dies down or the sun goes behind the cloud). That’s to say, for all you self anointed geniuses out there who could not find an IQ point with flashlights, road maps, and a pack of hound dogs, you’ve just doubled the cost of electricity to build an idle plant and have gained nothing in the process because you are going to have to rely on the same old generating methods we used to date.

My quest for intelligent life on earth continues!

Yeah... Won’t that be fun? Imagine waking up in the morning to find your car turned into a paperweight because the power company tapped it in the middle of the night.

Why doesn’t the utility company buy a bunch of batteries and place them all over the grid and save themselves 3k per year per battery?

With the astonishing advances in electrical motors, capacitors and batteries lately its entirely possible for a car to in certain conditions to use dynamic braking to return home with more energy than when it left for a days commute, with computer aided drive by wire in commuter carlanes, percentages of downgrades or even the combined charging of solar panels while the cars waits through the work day its entirely possible, practical and researchable.

I think i just heard a lot of Arabs groan.
