Kate Moss was rhetorically flogged in the nineties by all us Right-thinking people as being the embodiment of “heroin chic.” Her big break was as a teenage Ralph Lauren model in the early nineties where one and all got a good look at her hindquarters displayed on the sides of busses.
This dovetailed with the Calvin Klein scandalette of the sinister TV ads that made people think of gay kiddie porn and were lampooned in MTV’s “Beavis and Butthead.”
At around the same time Larry Clark’s ooky “Kids” came out, which was either a good cautionary tale against teen sex or a disgusting wallow in same (It did at least launch the career of Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson).
Roughly contemporaneous to that; gloomy, emaciated pop-idol Fiona Apple launched her debut album which included a hideous video that, while it didn’t actually show much, artfully insinuated all manner of atrocities and (according to legend) inspired Courtney Love, of all people, to call her up and asked if she had been drugged or something.
Now I’m getting all nostalgic...
