I urge everyone to write Motorcyclist Magazine and let them know how you feel. Below is the letter that I wrote to the magazinie.
Just picked up the Nov 07 issue (of Motorcyclist) from the (Post Exchange) PX. I needed something to read while waiting in the barber shop for my high-and-tight. I flip open the magazine and go straight to the Buell article by Aaron Frank.
I get half way through the the first paragraph when I came across the phrase "ambiguous Iraq War". This is a slap in the face to anyone who has worn a uniform.
First, as a Sr NCO with 20 plus years, there is nothing ambiguous about the war in Iraq. It is so very clearly a part of the larger war against Islamic Terrorism. Haven't you seen the videos of hooded men shouting Allah Akbar Every time they chop off a head or bomb innocents and Soldiers alike. Doesn't Frank remember 911?
There is nothing ambiguous about watching an Soldier present a triangular shaped folded flag to a woman or child seated beneath a canopy and reverently recite a solemn speech that begins,"On behalf of a grateful nation."
I spend everyday thinking about the war and how best to train new Soldiers so that they can carry on and win this "ambiguous war".
So when I pick up a motorcycle magazine the last thing I want is politics from a publication that should stick to what it knows, motorcycles, and let the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines handle the war.
Great tag line...
Friend my family is split down the middle between American and “Rice-Burners”, as well as drag racing Yamaha’s and a recent inclusion of a ‘Busa.
In the end, I don’t care what you ride, as long as you ride.
As long as you return my wave when you’re in a good line with at least moderate traffic. If you don’t I don’t care what you ride, you’re a jerk.
btw. In my experience the dang Vespa riders seem to be the foremost elitist of all the 2 whellers... I’m just sayin’.

I agree....ambivalence was a better choice
Thanks TB.
As far as I can tell, there's nothing either Harley or rice about this motorcycle. It's a Buell with a Rotax engine -- the Harley engines weren't powerful enough, light enough, or compact enough.
Yes, Harley owns Buell, but it would be like saying a Ducati is a Harley if Harley bought out Ducati. So it's a little misleading to see Harley will be displaying the new Buell 1125R in their museum:
"The serial number one Buell 1125R will become part of Buells history, saved for the Harley-Davidson Museum, which opens in 2008."

From "Buell Builds a Better Engine"
The engineering team should be happy with what we have accomplished because none of these innovations are insignificant, Buell says. Whats most amazing is that we self-funded this engine without Harleys help
We talked to a number of people about the project. Porsche was a possibility, but we were all impressed with the Rotax teams style. Their way of thinking was a significantly better fit than Porsches was, says Buell, who dedicated five of his design engineers to the 3.5 year project that eventually resulted in the Helicon engine: A compact 72° 1,125-cc V-Twin producing 146 hp at the crankshaft. The 72° angle turned out to be the best compromise for packaging. We considered a 90° but that packaging was too difficult to work within our chassis design, Buell adds..

A garage is a perfect place for a Harley. Well, that and on top of a trailer. ;)
After posting this thread I received the below email. The name was Phil Newkirk, so much for remaining nameless unless he was using a pen name. Anyway, if you read what Phil wrote there is no way he is a freeper but more or a troll from DU or Kos. I’m not saying that a freeper can’t have differing opinions but this email is too far out of left field to be from a freeper.
BTW, I ride a silver (fastest color) R1150R. Keep the rubber side down.
Here is the email, enjoy:
Saddam had as much to do with terrorism and 9/11 as I did.
Fact is, he hated al Qaida and it was a mistake to remove him, our only buffer between the Saudis, al Qaida, and Iran. The ambiguous Iraq war has no clear mission and no clear endgame, and has arguably generated, not prevented, radicalization and terrorism. IMHO.
Sincerely,
a fellow FReeper who shall remain nameless
If this is true then why isnt Bin Laden out telling us how happy he is ?
Stupidity is fine if you can get it and it comes in handy when someone wants to live in a fog.
I’m not sure what to say, other than that your correspondent seems to have his head buried in the sand. I believe that his “factual” assertions are all wrong.
Same here, 07 695!
was this person a rider before or after they got the job.
There is no excuse for this author’s comments.
Nor will a BS “I am sorry SOME people were offended” even work.
BTW, Phil Newkirks email address is:
philnewkirk@gmail.com or at least that’s the return address that was shown.
It’s not in the sand where his head is buried.
Not the kind of bike I would go for, but it does look way cool.
is this supposed to be the author?
Aaron Frank sounds likely Jewish.
Phil Newkirks sounds like Dirk Diggler.
lol, Ah, so Saddam was a benevolent murdering dictator.
Too much kool-aid ! I’m Jim Jones and I approve this message.
But most Vincent owners can.
The firm was founded by British racer Howard R. Davies, who was famous for winning the 1921 Senior TT on a 350cc AJS. He won the Senior in 1925 on his new marque; unfortunately this win was not enough to prevent a downturn in sales before the firm was adequately established and his factory was closed in 1928.
The trademark was bought by university undergraduate Philip C. Vincent, who had just patented a "cantilever" spring frame, which was subsequently a feature of all Vincent-HRD machines.
And from there, the legends began....
Reminds me of a Hogan's Heroes character, 'e does!
