Gabby Cirenza wanted to be a referee for Halloween. The outfit she liked had a micro-mini black skirt and a form-fitting black and white-striped spandex top held together with black laces running up the flesh-exposing sides. She looked admiringly at the thigh-high black go-go boots that could be bought as an accessory. And she thought the little bunny on the chest was cute.
"Absolutely not," said her mother, Cheryl. "That is so not happening."
Gabby is 11.
And the Playboy Racy Referee costume was only the latest that her mother had vetoed one pre-Halloween-crazed afternoon at Party City in Baileys Crossroads as too skimpy, too revealing, too suggestive .
Bawdy Halloween costumes, however, have become the season's hottest sellers in recent years. Not just for women, but for girls, too. And parents such as Cirenza don't like it.
Gabby eyed the Sexy Super Girl but decided against it. A friend at her Catholic school had worn that costume for a Halloween parade and pulled the already short miniskirt way up to cover her tummy. "That didn't look very good." But Gabby did like the Aqua Fairy, a vampy get-up with a black ripped-up skirt, black fishnet tights and blue bustier that comes in medium, large and preteen. A medium fits a child of 8.
No.
How about the Funky Punk Pirate Pre-Teen, with an off-the-shoulder blouse and bare midriff?
No.
Gabby pointed to the Fairy-Licious Purrrfect Kitty Pre-Teen, which, according to the package, includes a "pink and black dress with lace front bodice and sassy jagged skirt with tail. . . . Wings require some assembly."
Cheryl Cirenza shook her head in exasperated disbelief. "This is all so inappropriate. It's really disturbing."

How sad it is that it has become socially acceptable for children to walk around dressed like sluts, and how sad it is that so many ‘Parents’ readily approve of such costumes.
I am too. I'm really going to be glad when low rise pants go out of style. I don't much like seeing them or wearing them.
Well, there's nothing Christian about bowling, do you avoid that as well? Football? Badmitton? Fourth of July?
Not just your opinion, FRiend.
It’s become a cultural event that celebrates death and the macabre. There’s nothing wholesome or edifying about it.
You already lost your argument with hyperbole. None of them have their orgins in pagan/occultic religion. Bowling, football, badminton, etc don't celebrate demons, vampires and death.

Kids: “Trick or treat!”
Us: “Oh look, how cute! A pirate, Superman, and a whore!”
Perhaps some public shame is needed to correct these trends.
Haven't you ever heard the phrase, "Blessed are the pinsetters..."?
I know I'm not the only one. A lot of Christian congregations organize alternatives to the death cult/halloween celebrations either as "harvest festivals" or as celebrations of "Reformation Day".
And don't you try to tell anybody from West Texas that Jesus didn't play Football...
I don’t know about preteens, but the adult women were looking alright at the party I went to on Saturday night.
I wonder if after shaking her head she kept her children in public schools.
>> On the one hand there are all the sexual harassment laws and complaints by feminists about the objectification of females. Pushing hard against this is the other side which seems to want to display as much sexual image as possible in public as well as in the entertainment medium, regardless of the age of the female.
Actually - I’ve often thought some of this was a backlash against feminism. Feminism denigrates female beauty, the natural female desire for a male companion, etc. Thus, feminism is so anti-feminine, and anti-sexy that girls and women have been going to the opposite extreme as a backlash.
Feminism went to one extreme, so women and girls over-emphasize their femininity and their attractiveness to men. In turn, feminists get more pissy, and more extreme. This is why feminism is increasingly radical in an age where Girls Gone Wild is increasingly popular.
As for the youth ... kids always want to grow up too fast. The problem is when parents allow it to happen.

“Pushing hard against this is the other side...”
That’s the only mark you missed. They are the same “side”. Self-contradictory. It’s no coincidence that the most sexually “open” places in America have the most stringent harassment laws.
It’s about women having all the power related to all things “woman”.

Hahahaha!
Not letting your girl dress like this is obvious to any good parent because of the number of pervs out there, not to mention if you start the kid on the road now your chances of being a grandparent the next few years rises exponentially.
But the worst part is you can dress some girls with the kind of outfits described in the article, and they look 5 or more years older than they are. Then some young guy goes out cruising for girls and ends up with more than he asked for. This happened more than once to me or my friends when we were in high school/college.
Luckily growing up in a small town someone would pretty quickly give us the heads up before it was too late. Some average Joe who’s not the least bit a perv gets his life destroyed (and some little girl knocked up) because momma thought it was OK to let her child vamp up to where she looks legal.
My daughter is going to be Hannah Montana. I thought, to make it different, we could bloody her up a bit, make her a Hannah Montana vampire or something. She wouldn’t go for it, though.
Sonny,
I was gonna say that but decided not too. I agree about the abuse part. I guess great minds think alike.
I don’t know why kids today just can’t go out and break windows, throw rocks at passing cars and steal smaller kids candy like we used to 50 years ago.
There may be a certain benefit to encouraging kids to classify this stuff in the same category as scarred monsters, pitchfork-wielding devils, green-faced witches with nose-warts, etc — silly get-ups you wear once a year until you outgrow trick-or-treating. It doesn’t scare me so much that young girls might dress like this on Halloween, as that many of them basically dress like this every day, often with the full approval of their parents. I can’t get very worked up about it being on the Halloween costume racks, while the school clothes racks are chock full of similar garbage year round.
