Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday in what appears to be the end of his tumultuous career with New York.
Rodriguez's decision, announced by agent Scott Boras as the rival Boston Red Sox completed their World Series sweep of Colorado, makes the third baseman eligible to become a free agent.
Boras said he attempted to notify Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of the decision but couldn't reach him, so he left a voice mail.
"He was traveling and I was traveling," Boras said.
Rodriguez loses the final $72 million in guaranteed salary in the record contract, which he signed with Texas before the 2001 season. The Yankees lose $21.3 million in remaining payments from the Rangers, a subsidy agreed to at the time of his 2004 trade. New York has said it would not attempt to re-sign A-Rod if he opted out.
Boras said during a telephone interview that Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees. Boras said it became clear that the others wouldn't make a decision by Rodriguez's deadline to opt out -- 10 days after the World Series.

I’d only give a 50-50 chance that the other owners would approve a cub sale to Cuban. His antics with the Mavericks won’t be welcomed in MLB.
It is good to have that tedious World Series thing out of the way, so now we can get back to what matters... The New York Yankees. (Who won, BTW?... Cleaveland?)
The Yankees are better off without A-Rod. A lot of teams have been building rosters for the post-season the last eight years or so. The theory is you build a team that can do well in the play-offs, and let the regular season worry about itself. This is a result of the expanded play-off system, IMHO. With eight teams making the playoffs, you just don’t have to be that good anymore to play in the post-season.
A-Rod is the exact opposite of what you want in the “build a team for the playoffs” model. He’s boffo in July and August, but disappears in October. You would say it was bad luck or he had a few off nights, but he has been doing this for years and years. The Yankees don’t want to win to get into the Playoffs, they want to win the World Series, so A-Rod is the exactly wrong man for the job.
He will be a great benefit to some other team, who needs a big boost to get to play-off contention, but I don’t think he wants to go to someplace like Baltimore. A-Rod is going to be very suprised when the Angels, Bosox and Indians don’t come calling. He just doesn’t have what they’re looking for.
Wait a minute... A-Rod is a Shortstop?
it is great to see all the Yankee haters on this site....
A-Rod could not say anything until the series was over...it is over and the red Sux nation has another world series ring....his loyality to a team is a long as a paycheck...mariners/rangers/Yankees/????......
I don't like Hank Steinbrenner at all. He's going to prove how the succeeding generations squander what the first built. Nevertheless, A-Rod's postseason stats speak for themselves:
POSTSEASON BATTING STATS | ||||||||||||||
Year | Team | G | AB | R | H | HR | RBI | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | AVG |
2004 | NYY | 11 | 50 | 11 | 16 | 3 | 8 | 6 | 7 | 2 | 1 | .414 | .600 | .320 |
2005 | NYY | 5 | 15 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 6 | 5 | 1 | 1 | .435 | .200 | .133 |
2006 | NYY | 4 | 14 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 0 | .133 | .071 | .071 |
2007 | NYY | 4 | 15 | 2 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 6 | 0 | 0 | .353 | .467 | .267 |
Maybe now they can get back to the World Series.
LOL...
With A-Rod, everything is always about him. God forbid the spotlight be on the Red Sox.
Yeah, he fired JOe Giradi because Joe refused to kiss his butt and play the Marlins the way Loria wanted,
Also Joe told Luria to shut up and not belittle umps during games.
Not necessarily a good idea.
Though it would be nice for him to play for the Cubs, it would be impossible. Most of the best players in the league have started their careers with the Cubs, been traded before they became good and then went on to have stellar careers. It is only after they are physically worn out do they come back home to Wiggly Field.
Payback for Johnny Damon?
Rodriguez is only 32.
Sox will sign Lowell.
The Yankees would not have made it to the post season without A-rod....
....and all the other big guns on the Yankees did equally pathetic in the post season.
Well put.
yep, and your ny yankees still SUX
Funny stuff here.
