'This Is Not a Bluff'- A Christian political leader on the threat of a third party.

Christian conservatives want more respect. They were instrumental in propelling George W. Bush to power—twice—and now they're feeling neglected. At a "Values Voters" summit in Washington last week, leading evangelicals gathered to speak out and take a straw poll. The survey showed how unhappy they are with the twice-divorced, pro-choice Republican front runner for the presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani. He got less than two percent of the overall vote. (Some Christian activists have threatened to back a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.)

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll of 5,775 conservatives, which included voters who have been able to cast online ballots since August. But many evangelicals are uncomfortable with Romney's Mormon faith. That may have factored in the voting of people who actually attended the summit: Romney lost that tally by a wide margin to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister. To better understand the current thinking of Christian conservatives, NEWSWEEK's Jeffrey Bartholet and Eve Conant spoke to Richard Land, a leading evangelical who serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Excerpts:

I am a Christian conservative, but they should not do this. If they do, they will cause damage equal to that of Ross Perot. Different issue, same result.

You are absolutely correct.

Instead of threatening, these people need to ignore the NewsWEAK reporters and work for positive change within the party. Then, when it comes to general election time, vote Republican.

Think about it: what if ALL the conservatives had shown up in 1976? Yeah, we would've had a flawed, sometimes-RINO Gerald Ford...but we SURE as hell would not have had JIMMY 'SURRENDER TO TERRORISM' CARTER.

That’s all the info you get.....I thought the answer was kind of a trick question and picked 4. Then it sounded like maybe they added the 3 & 4 together on ONE side to get 7? Because if you make a triangle with a 3 inch side and a 4 inch side...the bottom comes to 3 1/2. Stupid question.

It's in response to a slur that said, Only to people like you that are so intellectually lacking That was in post #179. If you don't have that context, then you can't evaluate my comment.

See #187.

Rudy is a liberal democrat. I’ll not support him for any reason.

Those who insist on Rudy in the primaries are responsible for a Hillary presidency.

There are MANY good Republican candidates running besides super-lib Rudy.

I also think that our Prot/Cath debates are just a part of our presence here: we have an awful lot that we come together on.

I have long recognized that despite the differences over dogma, conservative Catholics and Evangelical Protestants are in basically unanimous agreement on everything else.

I do believe that His Church will be reunited (and obviously you and I have somewhat different visions of what that will look like) in the not so distant future. It is clear to me that the left is determined to destroy traditional Christianity and I believe that persecution will push His children closer together.

Life is the most important concern of America.

As I said on Jim Robinson's thread over the weekend, any society that remains silent on the wholesale slaughter of over a million people a year lacks the moral authority to lead the free world.

I don’t see him as a Liberal.....and you’re wrong—the people who don’t vote for the repubbie candidate are responsible if Hitlery gets in. If Rudy is our nominee, I’ll vote for him. The glass is only half full with Rudy, but I’ll take half rather than the empty glass with cankles in there. She will do alot more damage in the long run than Rudy would. You are being very selfish. (I want Thompson myself)

Yes, we agree...and if Rudy(or whoever) doesn't stop the terrorists, my life will be in jeopardy. ;p

That may be so, but consider these facts:

- More Americans have died in abortuaries THIS WEEK than have died in the War on Terror (and this includes the deaths on 9/11/01).

- More Americans have died in abortuaries THIS MONTH than have died in ALL American wars COMBINED (including terrorist attackes) since the start of the Vietnam War.

- More Americans will died in abortuaries THIS YEAR than have died in ALL American wars and terrorist attacks combined.

Thanks for putting Hillay in office.....

You can thank the Giuliani supporters for that.

This kind of selfishnes really makes me laugh......to be able to call yourself a conservative is a lie because you are helping to put in a true liberal who will elect liberal judges and do everything else she can to bring down our country to liberal standards. And that would last longer than any Rudy candidacy.

FWIW, I am not a "conservative" first. My first loyalty is to God and then family. That being said, it is my firm conviction that a Giuliani presidency would be much worse for conservatives than a Hillary presidency. A Giuliani presidency would mean the death of conservatism for at least the next 16 years. If Hillary is elected she will do for this country what Jimmy Carter did, i.e., give us another chance to elect a Ronald Reagan for a good 8 years.

The Republicans will live to regret a Giuliani ticket. Let us pray that never happens. But let us also remember that every cloud has a silver lining. Jimmy Carter gave us Ronald Reagan.

Wrong. Runoff elections would eliminate the problem while simultaneously providing for at least the possibility of some third party rising up to replace the rogue dems. With runoff elections, nobody would ever hold any office with less than 51% of the vote.

What does that have to do with electing Rudy? He would appoint more conservative judges than hillary. And what makes you think anyone that wants to get an abortion is not going to go to Canada or Mexico? Do you really think that if they overturn RoeWade that that is going to stop someone? Is that your main reason for electing a President?

our nominee

See, that's where you've got it wrong.

Rudy is not "our" nominee. Yours maybe, but never mine. I'm a Christian first, politically a conservative, and only then a republican. If the republicans forsake conservatives or tell the Christians to get lost, then I'm OK with that. I'll get out.

If you don't mind my asking, I'm sort of amazed at the Rudy phenomenon on a place like Free Republic. You're not a newbie here....you've got about 2 years under your belt.

Why do you support him? What has he done to earn your conservative, primary election support for the presidency that is worth splitting the conservative vote?

Nice link, but there aren’t any quotes from Dobson saying he supports Newt Gingrich or that he wishes Newt would run or anything like that.

‘They’ll act just like my five year old. Throw a tantrum, fall on the ground, and kick and scream until someone pays attention to them. They aren’t bright enough to realize they have a choice between 90% of what they want and 0% of what they want. They’ll shoot themselves in the foot and get 0% because they want attention.’

Yep.
