Christian conservatives want more respect. They were instrumental in propelling George W. Bush to powertwiceand now they're feeling neglected. At a "Values Voters" summit in Washington last week, leading evangelicals gathered to speak out and take a straw poll. The survey showed how unhappy they are with the twice-divorced, pro-choice Republican front runner for the presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani. He got less than two percent of the overall vote. (Some Christian activists have threatened to back a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.)
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll of 5,775 conservatives, which included voters who have been able to cast online ballots since August. But many evangelicals are uncomfortable with Romney's Mormon faith. That may have factored in the voting of people who actually attended the summit: Romney lost that tally by a wide margin to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister. To better understand the current thinking of Christian conservatives, NEWSWEEK's Jeffrey Bartholet and Eve Conant spoke to Richard Land, a leading evangelical who serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Excerpts:

1.) Fiscal Conservatism. Who in our group would not agree with wanting a fiscal conservative as a president and if they do not want one why?
2.) Hawks. We all want someone who is strong and will activate our military if we feel there is a threat against out country or our country's core values. Who does not agree with this in our group and or what would be their objections otherwise.
3.) Government out of our lives and business as much as possible. Agree/disagree?
Are there other core agreements people can think of?
With any business comes a mission statement. Although we may disagree on some issues this does not stop us from drawing up clarification of what we CAN and DO agree on. What are those items? Let's list some of those, too.
Ah, showing your anti-christian bigotry again. Get lost, troll.
Any bigotry I have is against stupidity and superstition.
Go back to DU, you bore me.
No Giuliani, No Problem.
This is Newsweak proping up the Fruitless Five vote splitters.
Thompson or Romney and Hillary falls.
More power and money for Christian elitists. Things have been a little soft recently.
No matter which gang wins, the American people lose.
I am against Nannyism, whether it’s socialist nannyism, or liberal nannyism, or evangelical nannyism. We have a constitution. I want the Gov out of my wallet, my bank account, my den, and my bedroom.
Newsweek and the MSM want a third party. Ignore them.
The Republican candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, are far more superior than the Democrat candidates.
Rudy has stated that he is personally against abortion but he must follow the law. Whether we like it or not the courts have ruled in favor of abortion. I don’t know where he stands on gay marriage??
It's not a problem for the GOP....it's a problem for the Evangalists.
I dont’ think they care who they elect. They only care about their issues....if they don’t get their way, they pick up their toys, give the rest of us the finger and go home.
“The fiscal conservatives ran to Perot- but only because our Republican President committed political suicide.”
How did that work out?????
There are too many who do not want it solved. They feel they have more power by threats. Frankly, I'm getting a little fed up with the so-called "values voters". We have plenty of good candidates. Get behind one and quit whining.
What you may want is God out of your bedroom. That could get you into deep doodoo.
