Left, Right, Wrong

LOS ANGELES —

The other day, liberal talk radio host Randi Rhodes was reportedly out walking her dog when she fell and hit her head. She didn’t remember what happened, which led at least one of her colleagues, and countless bloggers, to speculate that she had literally been a victim of the Right-wing hit machine.

Not so, as it turned out. No one hit her, Right wing or otherwise. She fell. The colleague who had ranted about the Right attacking her apologized and took it all back.

End of story? Not quite. The next day, I appeared on Hannity and Colmes to discuss it all. Wasn’t this another instance of the Left-wing hate machine in action, trying to silence talk radio hosts of the Right, seeing violence when there was none, and spewing their own version of it?

So, yes, the Left was wrong to seize on Randi Rhodes’ injuries as an occasion to attack the Right. But the Right is wrong too, in using the attacks to justfy the launch of a new barrage against the Left.

Bovine product. The Left proposed right-wing violence that did not exist. The Right protested it. There is nothing wrong with that sequence of events and they are not morally equivalent.

BTW, should O'Reilly get bopped there'd be plenty of suspicion to go around on both sides. He isn't exactly a poster boy on FR these days.

Would the Right have done exactly the same thing if, God forbid, it had been Bill O’Reilly, and not Randi Rhodes, who fell on a city street?

No question.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we all do it, everybody does it. It's all the same, it's just that we get caught more...

Give it up, already.

She's delusional. A hurricane hits New Orleans, and it's President Bush's fault. Al Gore won't concede the 200 election, and it's Bush trying to "steal" the election. It goes on and on.

If anything bad happens, they blame the Republicans.

It's how they view the world.

If it was O’Reilly, there would have been as many suspects on the right as on the left.

Nah - whether or not they blame the Republicans has nothing to do with whether or not anything happened.

They blame anyway.

She offers no examples of right wing paranoid conspiracy theories about talk show hosts that proved ungrounded.

Just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean that they aren’t out to get you. Where is the right wing “Media Matters” deliberately taking things out of context? Be it a case of them smearing Bill Bennett, Rush Limbaugh, or Ann Coulter.

She also lies by ommission by claiming that many “talkers” are conservative (and a number of not so conservative hosts who play to the right for a paycheck). She omits the details of just how many ANCHORS are libs spouting DNC talking points that have been faxed to them.

“Fairness”? Does this mean that every movie that engages in politically motivated plot twists would debate the issues presented in the course of the film, or turn over a “commentary track” to conservatives for the DVD release, or would the studio be expected to provide a similar budget for conservative themed films?

The Left cannot compete in the free marketplace of ideas. Al Gore refuses to debate the “scientific evidence” of man made global warming and his “doom and gloom in our lifetime” scenarios.

But they’ve been with me when I’ve been chased across the Target parking lot by a woman screaming that I was a “baby killer,” and when I was left a threatening package upon arrival in a hotel where I was supposed to give a speech.

As opposed to the Hollywood Reds who are AGAIN calling US troops "baby killers"?

"You’d think the market, if it worked half as well as my conservative friends claim, and if I’m not alone, would respond with some choices. But it doesn’t, mostly because no one gets fired for imitating what works (Rush and Sean) rather than trying something new."

LOL, what a friggin LOON!! The reason there are relatively few lib talk shows is simply because there are no sponsors for them. Estrich is simply to stupid to understand the free market system and to further realize it is working perfectly.

“Does the Left have any monopoly on paranoia, on trying to silence those with whom they disagree? On vicious assaults, at least of the verbal sort?

Not even close”

Talk about denial. This woman’s head is so far in the ground; she can’t see anything that’s the truth.

"In fact, the radio airwaves are dominated by conservatives and those to their Right. I can’t listen to most of them, which leaves me very few people to listen to. You’d think the market, if it worked half as well as my conservative friends claim, and if I’m not alone, would respond with some choices. But it doesn’t, mostly because no one gets fired for imitating what works (Rush and Sean) rather than trying something new."

Wrong, Susan. Leftwing radio fails because people don't like listening to three hours of "Bush s*cks!" The left can't compete in the market of ideas. The left can only compete if dissent is silenced and they have a monopoly on the news. It has nothing to do with imitating what works. Rush, Sean, Boortz, Medved, etc., can sell air time (advertising) because they draw an audience of people who find their comments interesting. They dissect liberal lies and provide a counterbalance to the liberal MSM.

Rhandi Rhodes and her ilk can't draw an audience because they don't have anything interesting to say beyond "Bush S*cks!" Why would a business pay money for a radio advertisement that nobody will ever hear? From where I'm sitting, the free market is working exactly as it should.

Go back to Econ 101, Susan. Read about supply and demand.

I wish I could remember the FReeper (so I can give credit) who said the following:

Susan Estrich sounds like Harvey Fierstein doing an impersonation of Carol Channing.

Your comment proves Estrich correct. Why must every woman who doesn’t look like Katherine Zeta Jones be slammed as ugly on this board? I thought conservative men were supposed to be gentlemen, with some standard of decency and good manners.

she had literally been a victim of the Right-wing hit machine . . . No one hit her . . . She fell.

Doesn't matter, it's the seriousness and intent of the charges that matter.

All MSM employees will come to cite this startling new kind of danger -- beyond hate speech! -- physical violence, assassination attempts!

"The Senate Democrats must immediately launch another fund raiser to care for future victims!" demand MSM employees nationwide.

The 21th Century Fairness doctrine must include lengthy prison sentences to protect the public from the messengers of hate and assassins.

MSM employees are no longer the gatekeepers of news and issues and they've totally cracked -- plus there's a good chance many of them will lose their jobs soon.

I took that to mean ugly in the sense of her political views and not in terms of her physical appearance.

Maybe I’m just over-sensitive, but the feeling I get when I read these comments is that women, unless they happen to be young and REALLY hot, should just shut up.

I’ve met Susan Estrich. I disagree with her about a lot of things and she does have some annoying mannerisms — I thought the Feirstein/Carol Channing comment was hilarious. But she is actually quite a nice and reasonable person, one of the Dems that you can have a civilized discussion with.
