After fight, airport embraces SUX code

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - City leaders have scrapped plans to do away with the Sioux Gateway Airport's unflattering three-letter identifier — SUX — and instead have made it the centerpiece of the airport's new marketing campaign.

The code, used by pilots and airports worldwide and printed on tickets and luggage tags, will be used on T-shirts and caps sporting the airport's new slogan, "FLY SUX." It also forms the address of the airport's redesigned Web site — http://www.flysux.com.

Sioux City officials petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration to change the code in 1988 and 2002. At one point, the FAA offered the city five alternatives — GWU, GYO, GYT, SGV and GAY — but airport trustees turned them down.

"Let's make the best of it," Bernstein said. "I think we have the opportunity to turn it into a positive."

He noted that many airports, including some of the busiest, have forgettable three-letter codes.

"I've got buddies that I went to college with in different cities that can't even remember their own birthdays, but they all know the Sioux City designator — SUX," he said.

I'm sympathetic. For a year my ISP netmask included "chump".

I flew to Sioux City once on business. The airport was fine. But the hotel I stayed in (Clarion Hotel) SUX. 2 hours to deliver room service pizza and a salad?!?!

“SUX” to “GAY”?

Someone at the FAA has a sense of humor.

LOL

I can see her in a TV commercial saying, "Nobody knows SUX like I do." LOL

Hmm... The airport identifier SUX seems appropriate since the HQ of Gateway Computers is not that far away.

Yes I think Gateways suck. [Have I started a PC holy war here?]

In CA it’s a short hop from LAX to FAT.

Gateways are rotten boxes. Terrible quality and reliability. The company has the worst customer support as well.

There are also 4 letter codes for airports, starting with K for airports located in the US. Little Rock Arkansas has a very interesting code since they use the first three letters of the city name preceded by the K. Very appropriate for Bill Clinton’s home state wouldn’t you say?

It’s possible that I’ve received poorer customer support in my life than what I got from Gateway when my box from them died, but darned if I can remember when. When you call sales you get a very friendly English-as-a-first-language person, but the moment you make the purchase your calls are routed to some third-world country. I swear I would rather pay an additional 25 or 30 percent and be able to deal with someone who speaks my language.

There are also 4 letter codes for airports

It's the same code with the country as a prefix. Travele agents drop the country code but ATC and the regulators use them, so Atlanta is ATL or KATL and Toronto is YYZ or CYYZ. The US country code is K.

It isn’t necessarily the same code preceded by the country identifier, in fact in most cases it isn’t. That wasn’t my point anyway. There’s a laugher in my first post if you figure it out!

I’ve always said that the FAA clerk responsible for assigning this designation to Sioux City must have visited there.
