LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

What’s transfixing (is that a word?) is how *fast* it’s moving.

Don’t forget everyone, 500+ acres are burning uncontrolled at Castaic right now. There was a fire at Porter Ranch/Northridge, but it’s contained around 20 acres.

As far as I know, they got nothing out of there before the fire.

This fire is hellbent on destruction.

Watching that castle burn on one of the feeds was just heartbreaking.

The nearest shorline to Pepperdine is south. It is confusing. If you look on the map you can see where the coast of CA curves. If you stand, looking out to sea, on the Malibu beach you are actually looking south.

What terrible losses... I had no idea...:(

Sad to think that the Malibu Presbyterian congregation stood helplessly by as their church burned, how sad.

KFI says part of Hughes Research Laboratory Malibu is on fire

Power's out through most of Malibu

This fire was caused by a transformer or some high-power lines. Not arson.
