UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

I wish these media outlets would show what’s going on WITHOUT the on-screen logos or banners. I was watching myfoxla online and measured the graphics. My screen is 12” verticaly. The on-screen banner is 3”. They cover ¼ of the screen with graphics. That’s disgusting. Let the pictures do the talking. They are more powerful.

It’s a vision of hell out there in Southern California. Prayers to all those that have been and will be touched by this tragedy.

Looks like Bill is going to have to mark down his assets by 0.000001%.

500,000+ evacuated from San Diego. Only 50,000 evacuated in 2003 Cedar fires. HUGE difference in scope.

They are letting part of Poway in and Scripps Ranch, but they are NOT anticipating letting ANYONE else back in until 24 hours from now.

RB will be 24 hours at the earliest before anyone is allowed in.

A relatively full list will be released of homes destroyed (destroyed only, not damaged it sounds like) in RB this afternoon (I’ll post a link for those interested).

The mayor and councilman said that Rancho Bernardo “looks like a war zone” and that the destruction is “very significant”.

New evacuations in Julian taking place.

I'm sitting 900 miles north in Idaho. I did ARES/RACES/Animal Rescue stuff from 1976 to 2000 when I live in the area.

KPBS loses signal, gains a partner in 94.9
Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Posted @ 12:26 PM

Local public-radio outlet KPBS-FM (89.5 FM) lost its signal, but it gained a partner.

The station went off the air at 5:30 a.m. yesterday when power lines feeding its transmitter were burned in the Harris Fire on Mount San Miguel. Broadcasting resumed three hours later on alternative-music station FM 94.9 (KBZT-FM), which volunteered to air KPBS radio’s news programming in place of its usual musical line-up.

“Our intention at this point is to continue to broadcast KPBS for the next two to three days until they have an opportunity to get up to San Miguel and figure out how bad is it is or is not,” said Darrel Goodin, vice president and market manager for Lincoln Financial Media, San Diego, which owns the station. “I think their programming is extremely valuable at a time like this.”

KPBS-FM has been airing wall-to-wall coverage of the wildfires since Sunday evening. In addition to airing on FM 94.9, the radio station can be heard vial the live Web stream on KPBS.org and on 97.7 FM in Calexico.

You must be in Southern Idaho. I moved to Northern Idaho in 2000. I thank the Lord that we are here.

My brother is down in Del Mar area. He is in training to be a volunteer with the FD. Not quite finished yet.

Can you answer a question for me? The county of San Diego. I keep hearing about the explosive growth, and no doubt the powers that be have been charging you through the nose, every bit of the high, high property taxes they say you owe... what infrastructure has been enhanced or added in the wake of the Cedar fire? I keep hearing how San Diego FF don’t have any resources available, no water, no water pressure, no access, no roads, no water towers, ... what is going on with the municipal leadership down there?? Where is the money being spent? Is it on sports stadiums and border patrol? Or lining the pockets of developers? Because I sure saw plenty of those on my trip between SD and the inland areas in September.

A friend of mine is down in SD with a horse trailer for the second day in a row - she said a normal 20 minute trip out was taking 2 1/2 hrs and that they were only able to rescue 16 horse yesterday.

I told her about the guy in Indio who said he could take 1,700 - she says it's too far immediately.

Maybe some sort of relay to get the horses to Indio could be worked out?
