LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

El Cajon is pretty biy..if you have a street or business name I can figure out where your friend is in relation to any evacuations. El Cajon is not under any evacuation order at this time.

The street name is Cuyamaca St. I have been there once but don’t remember much of the location except the hillside of brush behind the business. Several years ago our friend, who lives east of there had the fire burn down all the houses on his cul-de-sac except his. He was pretty shaken up then, and I hope things are going well now.

I lived most of my life in San Diego county. I moved my family to Idaho in Dec 2000 and finished my work in San Diego in April 2002. There has been lots of new building since that time, but I'm still pretty familiar with the areas being burned. Most of it was open space when I was a teenage kid exploring it on a dirt bike. It is sad to see it burn. Sadly, it is not unexpected. The fires come every year with the Santa Ana winds. The floods and mudslides are next on the disaster calendar. It is the "normal" weather cycle for southern California.

It is hard to see my friends and family being threatened by the fires. When I lived in the area, I was able to assist with ARES, RACES and Animal Rescue Reserve. Now it is just passive observation from 900 miles north.

I just found this thread.

Are you ok?

Do we have a list of S. Cali freepers that are checking in to let the rest of us know they are ok?

One guy just on the news built a fire proof home after losing his last one in 1993.

The firemen he stated have been using his garage as a refuge and his phone is the only one working so they are calling their families who are in harms way.

Just showed a reporter on the job and now this is sad but the house behind him burning to the ground is his own.

Prayers for S. Cali.

Be safe ya’ll.

I really don't think so...we should've done that. However, if they're evacuating...

There's so many Freepers spread around this state...

The floods and mudslides are next on the disaster calendar.

For what it's worth, they're calling for a dry winter.

As another person mentioned, El Cajon is a large area. It is nominally the area south of I-8, east of the 94 intersection with I-8 and southward to Willow Glen Dr. The east end of El Cajon is roughly Greenfield Dr on I-8. Cuyamaca St is mostly in Santee...north of I-8. Only a short section of Cuyamaca St extends into western El Cajon near the eastern edge of La Mesa.

For what it's worth, they're calling for a dry winter.

A wet winter means lots of grass for fires. A dry one means not enough grass to control the mudslides. It's a no win situation. If it stays dry, that just extends the fire season.
