Most Electable Republican Candidate
Rasmussen Reports ^ | October 19, 2007 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 10/19/2007 7:02:46 PM PDT by Josh Painter

The perception that Rudy Giuliani is the most electable Republican may be slipping a bit.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 66% of Republicans believe that Giuliani at least somewhat likely to win the White House if nominated. That’s down from 72% a month ago.

Sixty-one percent (61%) of Republican voters now say that Fred Thompson is at least somewhat likely to win in nominated. That’s up from 57% last month.

The gap between Giuliani and Thompson virtually disappears at a higher level of confidence—23% of Republican voters say that Giuliani is Very Likely to win if nominated while 22% say the same about Thompson.

Being seen as the most electable candidate is important for Giuliani because two-thirds of Republican voters see him as politically moderate or liberal. Thompson is seen as the most conservative candidate in the field.

As a whole, however, Republican voters are a lot less confident of victory than Democrats. Hillary Clinton is seen by those in her party as the most electable Democrat.

John McCain, struggling in the national polls, does fairly well in the electability category. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Republicans say he is at least somewhat likely to win if nominated. That includes 16% who believe he would be Very Likely to win.

Forty-seven percent (47%) say Mitt Romney is at least Somewhat Likely to emerge victorious if nominated. That’s down from 55% a month ago. Ten percent (10%) think Romney would be Very Likely to win, down from 15% in September.

Mike Huckabee is gaining ground both in Iowa and in the daily Presidential Tracking Poll. However, just 35% think he is at least somewhat likely to win if nominated. Only 10% see a Huckabee victory as Very Likely...

Rudy and Hillary should make a ticket.

They could wear each others clothes.

IMHO, FRed is coming on as more Repubs get to know him better. They’re getting to know Rootie better, too. And quickly discovering that he’s a gun grabbing, queer loving, anti-life RINO. Not to be trusted.

It’s not what Republicans think. It’s what voters think overall.

Well, I’d say Thompson is recovering from the attacks the left and right launched against him.

And Rudy is starting to falter because people are questioning if he really can win if pro-lifers and various other conservative constituencies refuse to support him.

i DO think the variables here are Huckabee and Romney. Romney is saying what some people want to hear. I don’t think he can win, but if people buy his rhetoric vs his record he can sipher off needed votes. then there is Huckabee who IS a social conservative. Unfortunately that’s ALL he is. But that could serve as enough of an attraction to segue voters to his side.

I still hold the opinion outside of Hunter who doesn’t even register in the polls, the only one with a record to bring the GOP’s base to the polls reasonably content is Thompson. Enough people won’t trust Romney, and Huckabee will alienate on the war, border, and small government.

actually, there is someone else but I despise him and don’t want to express my fears he could be a default candidate at the last minute due to infighting...especially with the GOP’s bases tendency to nominate people who’s “turn” it is..

Fred is gaining by default. He’s a lousy candidate. But the door is wide open because the front runners are libs, and no one gives a crap about Duncan Hunter.

Truth is, conservatives drafted Fred to run for POTUS. Fred’s doing well because conservatives recognize he’s got solid credentials and is the most viable and reliable conservative running.

Duncan Hunter is one of many lousy candidates in the lower tier. He’s got limited support and practically no money left. FWIW, Hunter`s candidacy is finished.

If you are a conservative and you wanna beat Rooty the liberal, back Fred!

This and your tagline make my point, btw. The problem is, Fred's not ready for prime time, as I believe we will all see. We've now had almost 6 months to evaluate Fred. It's not looking good to the non-deluded.

I sense truth in that.

Fred came in after an embarassingly long exploratory period and then has failed to excite anyone but his previous supporters.

That doesn’t mean that he can’t rally. But there is less than three months to make an impression before the votes start getting counted.

>>>>>Fred’s doing what well?

Everything! After six weeks, Fred`s running second in every national poll. Rooty, Romney and McCain --- along with most of the second tier candidates --- have been at it for almost a year! Wake up man. Stop listening to the RudyBoosters in the secular media, Mitt`s centrist cheerleaders and the general malcontents running at the mouth. See beyond the trashtalk.

"Thompson is seen as the most conservative candidate in the field."

And that's a helluva note, when we've got Dimocrats here in Texas as "Conservative" as Fred is!
