Thompson 'Terrible' in Chinagate Probe, Critics Say

(CNSNews.com) - On Tuesday, the day Fred Thompson made his debate debut in the 2008 presidential race, two conservative commentators criticized how the former Tennessee senator handled the 1990s Senate probe into Clinton campaign fundraising corruption.

Thompson was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee in 1997, when the committee probed Chinese money that allegedly poured into the 1996 re-election campaign of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.

"Had there been a legitimate investigation of Chinese money laundering, the results would have been very different from the results of Monica Lewinsky," said John Gizzi, political editor for Human Events, the conservative weekly newspaper.

Gizzi was contrasting Clinton's campaign finance scandal - which he deemed far more serious - with the sex and perjury scandal that led to Clinton's impeachment in the House and acquittal in the Senate in the late 1990s.

Fred Thompson was an ok senator and a good actor. But he was run over by the Clinton machine already and made to be a fool by the geriatric John Glenn.

Just so. I watched it on TV till I had to go wretch. Thompson was in charge but totally bent over for John Glenn(senatorial comity y'know) who shut down the entire investigation so he could be rewarded with a worthless and expensive ride in the space shuttle. Glenn's treason was bought cheaply. Thompson's malfeasance, or incompetence, depending how charitable you want to be, we are still paying for.

You’ve got a good memory. Thompson got absolutely stonewalled by the Clinton White House, and he got no support from his colleagues in the Senate. Thompson ran the best investigation he could - virtually alone.

I heard that Fred also voted against tort reform. He said he did because he felt it should be done at the state level (not the federal level). That said I do agree with most of Fred’s positions and would be happy to vote for him against Hillary if he ends up as our nominee.
